Kakegurui: Who Does Yumeko End Up With?

The Japanese anime series, Kakegurui, has amassed a large fanbase since its release in 2017. The R-rated psychological thriller has taken us on a ride for some nail-biting moments throughout the show. Leaving us wanting even more, after which season 2 aired and more recently, a spin-off show called Kakegurui Twin that aired last year in August. With that said, fans have a lot of theories and wish for their favorite characters. Hoping that their shared chemistry eventually becomes the endgame in the series as well. So let’s take a look at the main character of the show, Yumeko, who does she end up with in Kakegurui?

Who is Yumeko’s lover?

Yumeko Jabami is a young high school student who transferred to the Hyakkaou Private Academy. This is no ordinary high school, it is meant for the children of the wealthy from all across Japan. They have a regular tradition of gambling in the school.

The students play high-stakes gambling games, investing a lot of money in them, and if they lose all their money they automatically go to the bottom of the hierarchy. What this essentially means is that the students who are now in debt have to win back their money by serving as slaves to the other students.

This is a very intense environment to be in, and what’s even more surprising is that Yumeko thrives in it. She loves gambling very much and dislikes dishonesty. When she first arrived at the school she made friends with Ryota. He was in debt when she met him and decided to help him out.

Around the same time she met Mary Saotome, who was holding Ryota as her slave after he lost to her in a game. Since Yumeko dislikes dishonesty, when she notices that the game feels rigged in some way, she starts to uncover who is cheating.

She is very smart and that is also how she rose to the top, winning most of the games that were held by some of the biggest players. During this time Ryota was always by Yumeko’s side, and we can definitely tell that Ryota likes Yumeko.

Not only because she helped him, but he would often blush in her presence, implying that there might be an attraction there. Similarly, we saw Mary and Yumeko exchange a couple of moments together. Even though Mary might’ve disliked Yumeko at the beginning she grew to like her over time. Unfortunately, we have no definitive answer yet but the Kakegurui manga is still ongoing, and we might find the answer in the near future.

What are the top ships in Kakegurui?

Even though there have been hints mostly towards a potential attraction Between Yumeko, Mary, and Ryota, it’s not a surprise that the fans have their own favorite couples. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular ships from the Kakegurui series.

Yumeko x Mary (not canon)

As we’ve mentioned earlier, Yumeko and Mary are of our fan-favorite ships. Despite Mary not liking Yumeko initially, she grew to like her over time.

Kirari x Sayaka (canon)

This is another very popular ship, the characters Kirari Momobami and Sayaka Igarashi. The fans were very pleasantly surprised after it was confirmed to be canon, and in the second season, Kirari admits that she likes Sayaka as well.

Mary x Ririka (not canon)

Next, we have the ship between Mary Saotome and Ririka Momobami. Moments between Mary and Ririka have been pretty clear in the mand and the anime, showing their liking towards each other. Mary is seen ruffling Ririka’s hair and telling her that if she doesn’t want to she doesn’t need to gamble.

Itsuki x Manyuda (semi-canon)

Another canon couple from the show is Itsuki Sumeragi and Kaede Manyuda. Even before them working together in the student council, Kaede was actually the one who suggested Itsuki should join the council. After that, they became very close friends.

Ryota x Mary (not canon)

After Mary defeated Ryota in their gambling game, he became her housepet. So in the beginning she mostly likely felt power over him, but soon after Yumeko helped him out with his debt, she treated him differently. There were even moments where it implied Mary is jealous of Yumeko because of her relationship with Ryota.

Did Yumeko kiss Mary?

Unfortunately, Yumeko and Mary did not kiss. There hasn’t been such an instance in the manga or the anime. They did hug at certain moments but that’s it. Even though canonically the kiss did not happen, they do show a kiss between them in the season 2 outro.

Is Kakegurui LGBTQ+?

We would definitely say, yes, Kakegurui is LGBTQ+, with most of its ships being between the female characters, and some of them ending up in the canon as we’ve mentioned earlier. The relationship between Kirari and Sayaka was confirmed to be canon and many more romantic interactions that are mostly between female characters.
