Who Is Aegon Targaryen Married to in House of the Dragon? (& How Many Kids They Have)

Share:

One of the things that we saw in episode 9 of House of the Dragon’s inaugural season was Aegon Targaryen’s rise to the Iron Throne, which was something that he was reluctant to take. In that regard, he is now King Aegon II and is going to eventually fight for the crown against his sister Princess Rhaenyra. Of course, while he has to hold on to his throne, one of his roles as the king is to marry and then further the bloodline. So, who is Aegon Targaryen married to, and how many kids do they have?

King Aegon II is married to Queen Helaena Targaryen, who is his own sister, as they were married to follow the traditions of the house of marrying within the family to make sure that the bloodline is pure. In that regard, Aegon currently has two children with Helaena but has three legitimate kids in the book.

We all know that Aegon is somewhat the sleaziest character we’ve seen in the series so far, as his depravity has no limit. However, we do know that he was still able to fulfill his duty by marrying his own sister, as that was what his mother wanted him to do. Now, with that said, let’s look at Aegon II’s own family background so that we can get to know more about him and the members of his family.

Who Is Aegon Targaryen Married To?

It was in episode 9 of House of the Dragon that we saw Aegon Targaryen become the next Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, as the Greens installed him on the Iron Throne after plotting to give him the crown behind Queen Alicent’s back the entire time. Of course, Alicent was still going to agree to crown Aegon because she believed that this was what her husband wanted. As such, she was the one who took custody of her son so that she could proceed with how she wanted the crowning ceremony to happen and so that she could prevent her father from telling Aegon to kill Rhaenyra.

Now that Aegon II is now the king, the Dance of the Dragons is about to commence, and that means that we are about to see his Green faction going up against Rhaenyra’s Black faction. But other than trying to hold on to his throne as the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, another responsibility that he needs to uphold is his duty to make sure that he has a wife and that he produces heirs that would help further the Targaryen dynasty for generations to come. So, who is Aegon II married to?

We already knew as early as episode 7 of House of the Dragon that Princess Aegon was going to marry Princess Helaena Targaryen, who is his younger sister and the second child of King Viserys Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower. This was made clear in episode 7 while the family was on Driftmark during Lady Laena’s funeral.

There was a scene wherein Helaena was playing with a spider while she was chanting one of her prophecies. In that scene, Aegon said that he couldn’t believe that he had to marry her, to which Aemond replied that it was his duty to marry Helaena and that he would have done his duty had he been the one chosen by the Greens to marry his sister. Of course, after episode 7, there was a six-year time skip.

During that six-year time skip, Prince Aegon married Princess Helaena, as that was made clear when Queen Alicent scolded Aegon for what he did with the maid that was attending to his family. She told him that he should feel ashamed of his wife, as that was the clue that made us understand that he was already married.

Of course, a few moments later, Princess Helaena entered the room and asked where the maid Dyana was, as she was supposed to be the one dressing the children. In that regard, it was clear that Prince Aegon was now married to Princess Helaena. At that point, they also had children as well.

In the dinner scene involving the entirety of House Targaryen, Helaena made a toast to honor the betrothal of Jacaerys and Lucerys to Baela and Rhaena. She made a remark about her marriage to Aegon, as she said that he mostly ignored her except for when he was drunk. And after that, Jace felt sorry for her and asked her for a dance, as that was probably something that she had never experienced while she was married to Aegon.

Aegon, meanwhile, became King Aegon II in episode 9. The fact that Aegon II rose to become the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms now meant that Helaena was now his queen consort. That also means that their children were now the heirs to the Iron Throne, as far as the Greens were concerned.

How Many Kids Do Aegon And Helaena Have?

As mentioned, one of the duties of the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms is to procreate and produce more heirs so that the entire Targaryen bloodline will stay pure and will continue to persist for more generations. That means that Aegon had to have children with his own sister Helaena, as it was his duty to further the Targaryen dynasty. So, how many kids do Aegon and Helaena have?

In the series, Aegon and Helaena have two children. These are actually brother and sister twins named Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, who were both obviously named after their great-grandfather, the Old King Jaehaerys, who is often regarded as one of the greatest kings the Targaryen dynasty has ever had. However, in the book, they had a third child named Maelor, who was killed during Rhaenyra’s attack on King’s Landing.

Jaehaerys was also killed earlier because he was the victim of an assassination plot by Prince Daemon Targaryen, who wanted to avenge the death of Prince Lucerys, who was killed by Prince Aemond in Storm’s End. Daemon hired the services of Mysaria, who used her agents Blood and Cheese to infiltrate the apartments of Queen Helaena and her children. As such, they killed Jaehaerys as a form of revenge for what Aemond did to Lucerys.

Jaehaera became the only survivor among the children of Aegon II and Helaena, as she was eventually married off to King Aegon III to unite the two Targaryen branches and end the Dance of the Dragons. However, Jaehaera died before Aegon III could even truly assume his role as the new Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. Her death ended the line of Aegon II and Helaena.
