Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch’s Relationship Explained
The new MCU show, Wonder Man, has been in development for some time, and now, the name of the lead actor has been announced. Yahya Abdul-Mateen has been cast to portray Wonder Man, and now, people really started digging into the characters’ comic book past to see if some of it could translate to the MCU.
One such thing is the relationship between Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man in the comics, their connections to Vision, and their overall history of knowing each other. They have had a long relationship in the comics that only briefly turned romantic, but the entire nature of their non-romantic relationship is incredibly interesting.
Some of it could translate to the MCU, while some things just wouldn’t make sense, so without further ado, here’s everything you need to know about the relationship between Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man.
How Did Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch meet?
Rumors have stated that Elizabeth Olsen, the actress portraying Wanda Maximoff, has signed yet another 7-year extension of her contract with Marvel Studios. Olsen later clarified that those are just rumors and that she signs a new contract extension every time they want her to do a movie.
However, she did confirm that she doesn’t think Wanda’s end in the Multiverse of Madness will be the end of Scarlet Witch in the MCU. Hence, we just might see Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man meet in the MCU. That opens the question, how did they even meet in the comics?
Well, their relationship in comics is long and deep, and it goes way back, years prior to the events that are currently happening in the MCU, and they mostly revolve around both of their connections to Vision.
In the MCU, Vision is an android created by Tony Stark and J.A.R.V.I.S. He develops emotions and falls in love with Wanda Maximoff. However, that’s not the case in the comics. Well, a part of it is – Vision and Wanda dated, too, but the origins of Vis’ coming to life are much different.
Instead of J.A.R.V.I.S., Vision’s creation was done by using Wonder Man’s brain waves. It was never explicitly stated, but it was implied that it was the reason why Vision had feelings in the first place – they came from Wonder Man’s brain waves.
Have Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch ever dated?
After Vision was dismembered and then put back together to create White Vision, he was basically his old self but had no emotions of any kind, not even towards Wanda. She was devastated by it, as she loved him dearly, so she begged Wonder Man to help and give his brain waves again so that Vision could be brought back to his old self.
However, Wonder Man refused to do it for his own selfish reasons. You see, the entire time Wanda and vision were together, Wonder Man was jealous because he, too, had feelings for Scarlet Witch.
It has been argued that the only reason why Vision had feelings for Wanda in the first place is that Wonder Man had the same feelings. That was the core of Wanda and Simon’s relationship before it ever became romantic in any way.
After White Vision was left emotionless, Wanda tried her best to move on. She and Wonder Man worked together as members of the West Coast Avengers. Their relationship, with time, developed into something romantic, as Wanda saw some of the same qualities in Wonder Man that she had seen in Vision.
Still, she still had feelings for Vis, and couldn’t shake it off, so by the Kang Dynasty saga (notably, The Avengers Vol. 3 #51), the two broke up.
Will the connection between Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch be the same in the MCU?
While the writers might use some of the references from the comics – like Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch meeting, being friends, or even falling in love – they can’t follow the same storyline that the two characters had in the comics.
First of all, Vision was created differently and had no connections to Wonder Man, so that particular plot line is out the window. Second, by the time we got White Vision in the comics, Wonder Man and Wanda knew each other for quite some time. In the MCU, White Vision is already out there, and again, it had nothing to do with Wonder Man.
Also, Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch already broke up as Kang Dynasty was taking place in the comics, whereas they don’t even know each other in the MCU yet, and Kang is already here.
That means Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man can’t bond over the same thing – not in the same way as in the comics, at least. However, I can see a relationship brewing there, and the plot kind of heading in the same direction.
They could be working and eventually fall in love, but the relationship comes to an end due to Scarlet Witch still not being over Vision. That’s essentially what happened in the comics, too, minus all the details we discussed.
Whatever the writers choose, I bet it would be a great dynamic between Olsen and Abdul-Mateen, so I’m very excited to see if it comes to fruition.
