How Tall Is Optimus Prime? All 12 Autobots Heights
The first time that Optimus Prime transforms in front of Sam Witwicky is when we all realize just how powerful of a presence an Autobot like Prime can have. Apart from his large presence, his height is not a joke, as he appears to be one of the tallest Autobots in the universe.
But is he the tallest, and if not, who is the tallest Autobot, and what about the other Autobots that appear throughout the movie? How were the sizes for Autobots determined and consistent throughout all the movies, comics, and cartoons? How tall is Optimus Prime and the other Autobots in Transformers?
The size problem
My theory when I was first introduced to the Transformer universe about their height and size was that the Autobots’ heights match the vehicle length they depict. For example, the first movie depicts Bumblebee as a Yellow Chevrolet Camaro. In the real world, this car is a little under 16 feet long, and in the first movie, Bumblebee is 16 feet tall when he transforms.
Another example that actually breaks the illusion that the creators were careful about depicting correct sizes is Optimus Prime, whose vehicle is the Freightliner FL86 cab. This vehicle is around 20 feet long, but Optimus Prime is 28 feet tall in the movie, so what gives?
The writers were never consistent with how tall Autobots or Decepticons are, so there are multiple official sizes for all the Autobots that appear in the comics, movies, and cartoons. I’ll aim to take the heights from the movies as the official sizes and will only briefly mention the heights from the comics and the cartoon if this information is available.
Size changing
A good theory explaining why the heights were never consistent is that Autobots and the entire species originating from the planet Cybertron can it is. They can shift their mass to appear larger or smaller and even choose a vessel to inhabit that is a lot smaller or bigger than their actual size.
1. Optimus Prime

As I already mentioned, in the movies, Optimus Prime is depicted as a Freightliner FL86 cab that is 20 feet long in real life. In the movie, Prime is 28 feet tall, an 8 feet height difference. In his power-up form that he reveals in Revenge of the Fallen, Prime grows 12 feet and is 40 feet tall.
In the animated series, Prime is 22 feet tall, while the information about how tall he is in the comics is not disclosed.
2. Sentinel Prime

Technically, Sentinel Prime is not an Autobot since he worked as a double agent and eventually betrayed Prime in Dark of the Moon. Prime killed him in the same movie using Megatron’s fusion shotgun. Returning to his size, in the movie, it appears that Sentinel is taller than Optimus but not a whole lot taller, so if we presumed that Optimus Prime’s height was 28 ft, we’d give Sentinel Prime a height of 30 ft.
3. Jazz

Jazz is one of the shorter autobots in the first move, and just like Sentinel Prime is slightly taller than Optimus Prime, Bumblebee is also slightly taller than Jazz. In the movie, Jazz is 15 feet tall, whereas in the 2005 comic book series, he is 32 feet tall. In the cartoon series, he is closer to his height from the movie, but it’s still inaccurate as he sits 13 feet tall.
4. Ironhide

Ironhide is an Autobot whose height is inconsistent, even in the movies. In the first Transformers movie, he is 22 feet tall, and in Revenge of the Fallen, he grows 3 feet, making him 25 feet tall. In the cartoon, he is 5 meters tall, which equals around 16 feet, more or less. In his case, we’ll take the 22 feet height as the definitive answer.
5. Bumblebee

I already discussed Bumblebee’s vehicle length and how it translates into his height, which is equal in both cases. Let’s remind ourselves he is depicted as a Chevrolet Camaro that’s 15.6 feet long, and Bumblebee is 16 feet tall in the movie. In the cartoon, he is less than 3 meters tall or less than 9 ft tall, but that’s because his vehicle in the cartoon from the 80s is a Volkswagen Beetle.
6. Ratchet

In the movie, Ratchet’s vehicle is a Hummer; if we took a Hummer’s average length, it would equal about 16-17 feet. Now, let’s compare Ratchet’s official size to it. In the cartoon, he is around 16 feet tall, which would be perfect, but in the movie, he is 20 feet tall. Perhaps vehicle length is not all that matters when determining the final height of an Autobot, and mass also might be considered.
7. Sideswipe

Sideswipe’s vehicle is a Corvette Stingray Concept, around 15 feet long. He became Optimus Prime’s second in command after the death of Ironhide. In the cartoon, he is 4 meters tall, which turns out to be close to 15 feet, while in the movies, he is also 15 feet tall.
8. Jolt

The goofy Jolt’s alternative form or his vehicle was a simple Chevrolet Volt that’s around 15 feet tall in real life. There’s no information to confirm Jolt’s height in the movie, but we can look at the scenes where he appears and compare his height to other Autobots. He is slightly shorter than Bumblebee, so if Bumblebee is 16 ft tall, I can confidently predict that Jolt is at least 13 feet tall in the movie.
9. Arcee

Arcee didn’t have a major role in the movies, and she appears to be one of the shorter Autobots. She took on many alternative forms, but her original form was a Ducati 848 Sport Bike. As such, her official height in the movies was 7 feet, almost equal to a sports bike’s average length.
10. Chromia

Just like Arcee, Chromias vehicle was a sports bike, but in her case, it was a Suzuki B-King Sport Bike. We already know that the average length of a sports bike is approximately 7 feet, and even though her size is not mentioned, she is around the same height as Arcee, making her 7 feet tall as well.
11. Skids & Mudflap

Skids and Mudflap were a twin duo first appearing in Revenge of the Fallen. Their first form was an ice cream truck, which they shared, but later on, they both got their own vehicle, a Chevy Trax and Chevy Beat. Both Mudflap and Skids are 8 feet tall in the movies.
12. Wheelie

Wheelie was a minor antagonist turned protagonist whose vehicle was a Ford F-Series Monster Truck but a toy which makes him one of the smallest Autobots to date. It’s hard to discuss the length of a toy truck, but on average, one such model would be 13.5 inches long. His official size is not mentioned, so we’ll round out his height to approximately 14 inches in the movie.
