And while the recently-premiered anime adaptation of Hell’s Paradise promises to be a big hit, fans have, naturally, begun to ask questions about the series’ protagonist, Gabimaru. But, while Gabimaru is undoubtedly a very intriguing character in every aspect, we have decided to dedicate this article to another character, a character who has appeared very little in the story but whose role was pivotal. The character in question is Yui, Gabimaru’s wife, and in this article, we have decided to tell you everything you need to know about her and her role in the story of Hell’s Paradise, both in the manga and the anime.

Yui is the daughter of the Iwagakure village chief, a brutal man who killed Gabimaru’s parents and trained young Gabimaru to be his assassin. Because of her scar, given to her by her father for not being obedient, her father arranged for her to marry Gabimaru, also an outcast, and while the two of them had an awkward start, they grew to love each other deeply and were the source of each other’s will to live.

The rest of this article will focus on Yui and her role in the plot of Hell’s Paradise, as well as her role in Gabimaru’s life. Yui might be a secondary character in terms of her on-screen time, but she is nevertheless a very important one, which is why we will tell you everything you need to know. Be careful, though, as the article will be filled with spoilers.

Yui was presented exclusively from Gabimaru’s point of view

When we write articles about certain characters, we usually write about them and their stories, but Yui’s role in Hell’s Paradise is specific in the sense that until the very end, we never saw her in person. Her whole story was presented from Gabimaru’s perspective, so we must tell it like that.

A former shinobi, Gabimaru the Hollow, is now introduced as a convict scheduled to be executed. But despite multiple attempts at death, including decapitation, burning at stake, and immersion in hot oil, he manages to escape thanks to some mystical powers. We observe him speaking to a girl who appears to be writing down his story as he waits for the next failed execution. She is actually Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, the royal chronicler and executioner.

We learn more information about his background and life during their chats. It is revealed that Gabimaru was a highly accomplished shinobi who was feared throughout Japan. Tragically, though, his life was turned upside down when the local head slaughtered his parents and adopted him. He professes to be utterly dispassionate and has no attachment to life, meaning that he wishes to pass away but cannot do so. Although, from his perspective, he doesn’t really resist it—death just doesn’t want to take it—we notice that, despite his repeated denials, his acts don’t seem to be reflexes but rather manifestations of his will.

It is actually learned at one point that the reason he has survived every attempt at execution is that he has a great devotion to life and longs to see his wife, Yui, once more. Initially, Gabimaru acknowledged that he was married to the chief’s daughter, who had betrayed him, in an arranged union that he did not desire. He admitted to Sagiri that he did not love Yui and that their relationship was difficult overall, and certain flashback scenes supported his claims.

This is how we actually meet Yui. Later on, some additional details about her story are revealed. We found out that she was indeed the Iwagakure village chief’s daughter. The chief was a vile and evil man.

He was also a very strict father who scarred his daughter because she was not obedient. Namely, Yui was a very gentle person but a person with a strong will, and she did not simply want to perform the traditional roles of a daughter and wife; she wanted to explore the world and know more about it. She was very progressive, and her father hated that, so he abused her and gave her a scar on her face.

Because of her personality, he could not marry her, so he forced her into a marriage with Gabimaru. Gabimaru was his loyal shinobi and, like her, an outcast, which made them an ideal pair. Gabimaru accepted, but he wasn’t really attached to Yui at first, and from what he told Sagiri, the awkwardness never disappeared.

However, Gabimaru’s lies came to light later when Yamada Asaemon Sagiri revealed herself to be the royal executioner and truly showed him that she could kill him despite his magical abilities. It was established that he not only cherished his relationship with Yui but that his desire to see her once again stood in the way of his being put to death. As it turned out, their marriage was arranged and unpleasant at first, but that was only to be expected, given how odd they were as individuals. Due to her facial scar, which she suffered from her father because she refused to be an obedient child with no free will, Yui was handed to Gabimaru because no one actually wanted to marry her.

But it turned out that Yui was a very generous, polite, and wise person. Gabimaru liked her, and she liked him. It still took some time for her to get beyond his barriers and treat him with love and respect rather than as a monster. This was enough to get him to open up to her; he listened to her counsel, let her help him, and he was there for her. After some time, the pre-arranged union became a true love affair, and Gabimaru yearned to renounce his shinobi status to be with Yui. He informed her father that although the chief had concurred, he had actually set up a trap for him because he had been given the death penalty. But, as he was given the possibility of a royal pardon, he accepted the shogun’s mission and went with Sagiri to find the Elixir of Life.

Still, Yui is a vitally important character for the story of Hell’s Paradise

As we have said, Yui is a very peculiar character as she was only presented from Gabimaru’s memories. It wasn’t until the very end of the manga that we actually saw Yui in real-time, in person. For that very reason, many fans thought that Yui did not even exist and that she was just a figment of Gabimaru’s imagination. But no, Yui was very much alive, and we finally got confirmation of how important she was to Gabimaru when he returned from his mission. The two of them finally reunited and decided to spend their remaining years in peace, living alone in their house and being occasionally visited by friends.

Namely, after Yamada Asaemon Jikka informs Yui that Gabimaru survived, she is also told that he will meet her at a secret place. Gabimaru did show up at the designated place, and when Yui saw him, she started crying out of joy as the married couple returned to their home to live in peace. The shogun had, in the meantime, disbanded Iwagakure, which would allow the two to continue living in peace, free from the revenge of Yui’s father. After the adventure’s conclusion, we could see Asagiri and Yuzuriha visiting Gabimaru and Yui later, proving that they’ve remained close. And this is the whole story of Gabimaru and Yui and the true nature of their marriage in the series.
