And while the recently-premiered anime adaptation of Hell’s Paradise promises to be a big hit, fans have, naturally, begun to ask questions about the series’ protagonist, Gabimaru. But, while Gabimaru is undoubtedly a very intriguing character in every aspect, we have decided to dedicate this article to another character, a character who is as important to the plot as Gabimaru and a character who could be described as the second protagonist – Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. In the recent episode of the anime series, after fighting the Sōshin, Sagiri loses consciousness and seemingly dies from being exposed to the poison spread by the butterflies. In this article, we will tell you whether Sagiri died from that or not.

Yamada Asaemon Sagiri ended up being poisoned by the poison emitted by the butterflies. Although she was not stung by one, the poison nevertheless had an effect on her, and she lost consciousness for a while. She did not die, as we would soon see her waking up after having a nightmare about her father. While she was out, Genji was looking out for her while the others were exploring and doing other tasks.

The rest of this article will focus on Yamada Asaemon Sagiri and her fate in the most recent episodes of Hell’s Paradise and what happened later. Yamada Asaemon Sagiri might not be as popular as Gabimaru and not so much in focus in terms of her on-screen time, but she is nevertheless a very important character, which is why we will tell you everything you need to know. Be careful, though, as the article will be filled with spoilers.

Sagiri was poisoned after an attack by the Sōshin

Going back to the end of Episode 3, we saw Gabimaru and Sagiri being attacked by a group of monsters. These monsters are known as the Sōshin. The Sōshin are lower-ranked monsters that live in the Kotaku. They live in the Eishū in Hōjō and are strictly forbidden from entering the Hōrai. Their main role is to protect Kotaku from trespassing humans, and they serve as the first line of defense. They are mindless creatures, lacking intelligence and acting purely on instinct. They come in different shapes and sizes, and while they don’t really have any special powers, they can defend themselves, are capable of fighting, and some can use their biological traits to harm the enemy (for example, they can emit poisonous gas or have stings that can infect the target and turn them into a flower).

The battle against the Sōshin was a strange and tricky one, as the group was dealing with enemies they had not faced before, so they had to adapt their approach to the battle. Still, it was ultimately not an overly difficult one as Gabimaru and Sagiri managed to defeat them with relative ease. Then, they were joined by Yuzuriha and her two retainers, Genji and Senta, which was odd.

But, as it turned out, by the time they met, Moro Makiya was already dead. Why? Yuzuriha seduced him so she could use him as her puppet to explore the island, which is how he died, being turned into a flower by one of the Sōshin. By losing his criminal in such a way, Genji realized that Yuzuriha was dangerous and that she could not be left alone with just one executioner, so he joined Senta in watching over her. Yuzuriha was not that dangerous in that aspect. Still, her unique skills and her ability to easily seduce and manipulate men are what motivated Genji to keep an eye on her, as he wanted Senta to survive Yuzuriha’s skills.

The conversation then continued, as Yuzuriha tried to seduce Gabimaru as well, but failed miserably while trying, which made perfect sense, both because of Gabimaru’s unique personality and the fact that he loved Yui, his wife (Yuzuriha would later question whether Yui even existed, but her doubts were proven to be wrong). Still, she wanted to work together with Gabimaru as she simply wanted to get back home; after admitting the truth to him, Gabimaru finally accepted, and the two groups decided to unite in their pursuit of the Elixir of Life. But, at the end of that meeting, something unexpected happened.

As we have said, the Sōshin didn’t present too much of a challenge for Gabimaru and Sagiri, but they were peculiar creatures. Lacking any intelligence, they act purely on instinct. They are not completely oblivious to their surroundings, as they know what is happening, but they lack any tactical approach and only attack in groups, as their only goal is to eliminate the trespassers; they have absolutely no other purpose.

And while they have failed in their mission, as neither Gabimaru nor Sagiri were stung by them, we have said that they also have other abilities. One of them was the poison spread by the butterflies, which lingered on the scene even after the battle. Being exposed to a larger quantity of the poison, Sagiri lost consciousness and fainted, leaving her fate up in the air. The poison is not deadly in smaller quantities, but exposure to larger quantities could be fatal. So, did Sagiri really die?

The poison was not that potent and Sagiri survived

As Chapter 10 of the manga revealed, Yamada Asaemon Sagiri did not die of the poisoning. At the beginning of the chapter, she wakes up after a hellish nightmare involving her father. Genji was beside her, taking care of her while she was out. As the effects of the poison wore off, she returned to normal and found out that everyone else was doing their tasks, exploring the island and looking for the Elixir, but the latter search was unsuccessful. Still, the group found out some interesting things about the island, the Sōshin, and the dangers that await them in the future, but that is a wholly different topic, so we’ll leave that for another article in the future.
