Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is known, among other things, for its great world-building aspect. This has also been translated to the characters, as we’ve seen that even most secondary characters, villains included, have gotten some amazing backstories. The most recent episode of One Piece has given us a glimpse into King’s backstory, presented in the shadow of his epic clash with Zoro, in which King lost. Now, in this article, we won’t be focusing on the battle, but we will bring you King’s backstory, as you are going to find out which tribe King belongs to and why that fact is quite important when discussing this interesting and powerful character.

King, who was born as Alber, is the only known member of a rare and extremely powerful tribe in the One Piece lore – the Lunarians. Due to his heritage, he has been imprisoned and experimented on in Punk Hazard before being freed by Kaido, whose pirate crew he joined. The Lunarians are an important part of the history of the world of One Piece, which is why they are a relevant factor, and why King being a Lunarian is a fact worth discussing.

The Lunarians are a relatively obscure group in One Piece, and little information is available. In this article, we have gathered all we could to provide you with a most comprehensive, detailed, and thorough guide – as always – on this intriguing race whose role in the story is certainly important, even though it has not featured much, as well as about King and how the fact that he is a Lunarian reflects on his powers and abilities. Some spoilers might be ahead, so be careful how you approach the text.

King is the only known member of a powerful race – possibly even the last-surviving one

King has been an intriguing character since his debut in the series and fans have wondered about his backstory from the beginning. And while some details were revealed as the story progressed, especially in relation to King’s relationship with Kaido, as it was explained how and why he became so loyal to the tyrannical captain and Emperor. King was one of the three All-Stars of Kaido’s pirate crew, and he was, by far, the most powerful one, which is why he was Kaido’s most trusted crew member.

But, King was also the only known member of a near-extinct race from the Red Line, the Lunarians. The Lunarians were, as we are going to see soon, very special, and their blood was quite valuable, which is why the World Government, at one point, kidnapped and imprisoned King, then-known as Alber, in Punk Hazard, where they experimented on him and drew his blood. The blood would be, as was revealed later, used to create the Seraphim clones. Now that we have said this, we can tell you a bit about the Lunarias and their importance in the story of One Piece.

The Lunrians are near-extinct, but they are quite important

The Lunarians are a race of people from the Red Line who can create flames from their bodies (this is why it was, at one point, thought that Sanji might be a Lunarian, too, but this was confirmed to be untrue). This race is considered to be near-extinct, and King is believed to be the only known survivor (the Seraphim aren’t really Lunarians, they are clones created with King’s blood).

King is, thus, regarded as the only surviving member of this race, which is thought to have gone extinct. King, the sole Lunarian known to exist, is a towering humanoid with two enormous black-feathered wings on his back. In addition to having black wings, this race is distinguished by having white hair, dark skin, and a flame that may burn at will behind their backs.

It is unknown if King’s height represents a defining characteristic of the race as a whole or a trait unique to one individual. The Ignite power, which alone belongs to Lunarians, enables them to control and produce flames inside of their bodies. In addition, Lunarians’ physiology inexplicably grants them extraordinary resistance to physical harm, enabling them to survive in any natural setting.

However, there are times when the Lunarian loses its usual resilience, at which point the flames that were previously burning behind them go out, and they move much faster. It’s not yet known whether the flames of the Lunarian just burn when they choose to or whether there is a temporal limit on how long they can burn (thus their enhanced resilience). Unlike those of the people of Skypiea, Lunarians’ wings are useful body appendages that at least allow them to float in the air.

It was once believed that the Lunarians were a race of “gods” that resided at the top of the Red Line. According to Whitebeard, the “Kingdom of the Gods” on the Red Line allegedly existed before Mary Geoise’s arrival. On the other hand, the Lunarians were on the verge of extinction under as-yet-unknown circumstances, with only one living member of the tribe now known.

According to reports, the World Government continues to seek Lunarians around the globe, offering a huge bounty of 100,000,000 Berrys to anyone who can provide information regarding their whereabouts. This shows just how important the Lunarians are in the overall lore, as we know that the World Government targets only those they consider either dangerous or important.

Kaido commented that the Government would never leave him alone when they first met King, who was then known as Alber, at Punk Hazard. As a result, Totto Land, populated by numerous races worldwide, is home to only three races, one of which are the Lunarians. So that her nation would also have a representative of such a unique race, Charlotte Linlin voiced her desire to enlist King into her team.

Lunarians can release fire from their body, which they may manage and employ as weapons in battle. For example, they can cover their limbs in flames and use flames to increase the power of their melee assaults. They may harness their body’s natural ability to generate fire to intensify their melee strikes, unleash devastating fire blasts, and produce massive fiery figures.

The royal flame is so strong at its height that it seems to have the consistency of magma. It is uncertain if using these flames excessively harms the person in any way. Additionally, Lunarians are renowned for their extraordinary physical toughness, which is thought to have contributed to their former reputation as “gods.”

Queen referred to the Lunarian, who was still alive, King, as “a monster that can survive in any environment.” Furthermore, the World Government’s experts conducted studies and experiments on the King many years ago to gauge the extent of its resistance due to the race’s exceptional longevity. King has currently shown that he can withstand extraordinarily potent attacks without spitting forth a drop of blood.

Additionally, Lunarians either lose after a while or can purposefully extinguish the flames burning behind them, temporarily losing the indicated characteristic endurance in exchange for a sharp increase in speed. This enables representatives of this race to develop speed faster than that specially trained individuals can achieve.
