The popular volleybal manga Haikyū!! is known for being one of the most popular sports manga in history. And while the show has given us a lot of thrills in the sports sense of the word, it is not known for having many mysteries. This article is not going to focus on one specific mystery, but we are going to talk about an intriguing character from the series. Namely, you are going to find out who Suguru Daishō from Haikyū!! is and who he ends up with in the series. We at Fiction Horizon, of course, know the answers to all the questions related to Suguru Daishō, and in this article, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about him.
Suguru Daishō is a third-year student and the team captain at Nohebi Academy. Despite being an excellent athlete, he prefers the psychological tactic to beat his opponent; he is a sneaky and petty boy. He pretends to be an honest person, but in reality, he is a manipulator, preferring an unsportsmanlike tactic, as he does not hesitate to exploit his opponents to win. He and Kuroo have known each other for a long time, but they have never been able to stand each other. He is very close to Mika, his girlfriend.
The rest of this article will focus, as you’ve probably deduced for yourselves, on Suguru Daishō and his role in the Haikyū!! manga, as well as his relationships. Suguru Daishō is a very intriguing character we’ve seen in the manga and the anime, so it is only natural that fans of the series want to know more about him and his personal life in the series, which is why this article is ideal for true Haikyū!! fans. Spoilers from the series are going to be present, so be careful how you approach the article.
Suguru Daishō is one of the more competitive players in the series
Suguru Daishō is a third-year student at Nohebi Academy and also the captain of the school’s volleyball club. Suguru has a narrow, almost snake-like face, short brows, and distinctively slanted eyes that are a dark olive green color, almost black. His hair is thick and dark, and he maintains his bangs neatly brushed to the left.
He has a slim physique, and his tongue often sticks out. Daish enjoys making fun of others, especially the Nekoma players and is competitive. However, he becomes anxious and agitated when they make fun of him, which is how he reacted when Kuroo mentioned his former girlfriend in a discussion.
He is a cunning and deceitful individual who frequently puts on a friendly front during matches so he can be on the referee’s good side during the match itself. For instance, he would admit net hits and loudly apologize to boost the school’s reputation; however, unnoticed by the public, he would use covert tactics like purposefully throwing a ball in an opponent’s face or using the influence of the referee to his advantage when a spike is initially out.
Suguru maintains his composure while assessing the game scenario, as noted by Nohebi’s coach. As you can see, he is not really beloved.
But, aside from his horrible personality, Suguru was dedicated to volleyball, which we cannot take away from the guy. He loves volleyball and is determined to become the best, but not just individually – he wants his team to be the best. And while the motives behind his teamwork are mostly egoistic, they are effective in that aspect, and we cannot really deny that he is an excellent player because of that somewhat wrong attitude. It has made him better, and it also makes the team he is playing in much better.
A good example of it is the third-place match against Nekoma during the Spring High Preliminary Arc. Before the match, he gave his team a good talk, motivating them and telling them they could beat their opponents. As we’ve said, he was not a fair play model in any way, but he knew how to get the job done, and he was, seemingly, very effective in that aspect, as his talks and his tactical insight helped his team.
This has to be combined with his tactical genius and the fact that he puts a lot of effort into analyzing his opponents, both before the match and during the match. He is great at adapting his gameplay and giving his team instructions based on the situation on the field.
His relationship with Mika Yamaka has been the focus of the series
Mika Yamaka is, like Suguru, a third-year student at Nohebi Academy. She is a petite girl and her personality is completely opposite to that of Suguru. She is well-behaved, polite, and has absolutely no menacing personality traits. She is also not as competitive as Suguru, but somehow, they manage to become a couple despite their differences.
Their relationship was an important subplot in the story, especially since Mika wasn’t happy in her relationship with Suguru. And while she could tolerate the differences between them, she thought that he was too focused on volleyball and not so much on her, which is why, at one point in the story, she broke up with Suguru, which was a shocking moment. The two of them were never the ideal dream couple, but they were together for so long that no one thought they would just break up like that. But they did, which is why we said their relationship was an important subplot in the series. So, how did it all end up? Do they get back together?

From what we came to understand, Suguru did not see himself with anyone else besides Mika, and while Mika was at one point sure that she did not want to be with a person like Suguru, it wasn’t really like she had someone else. This is why the psychology of their relationship was so important. And while, from an objective perspective, this was not the best solution for them, and the relationship itself wasn’t the best one possible, it all played out quite well for both of them in the end.
Namely, at one point – and this is the most problematic aspect, really, as Suguru was not a good person, despite what happened – Mika realized that she was wrong and apologized to Suguru for not understanding just how much he loved volleyball and how important the sport was for him. The two eventually reconciled, and she went to the Spring Tournament to support him.
But that is the issue here. Suguru was never a good person, as we’ve said, and regardless of his love for volleyball, he was a bad person to be with, so Mika realizing the “error of her ways” was a horrible plot twist from the perspective of her character development, as she wholly submitted herself to a bad person. Suguru should have been the one that changed and not Mika, but that is what the author decided for them.
So, in the end, Suguru and Mika reconcile and get back together. Whether it was the best option for them, we leave it for you to decipher and decide for yourselves later.
