One Piece: Why Is Toko So Important for Wano Country?
Oda’s One Piece series has provided us with a series of interesting characters over the years, some of whom were more while others were less important. As far as Wano County is concerned, a very important secondary character was the pink-haired girl Toko, whose story we will present to you as you will find out why Toko is so important for the series.
Toko is a small orphan girl who lived in the Flower Capital in Wano, where she was the kamuro for Kozuki Hiyori, who was, at the time, donning the pseudonym Komurasaki so that she could be close to Orochi, whom she wanted to kill out of revenge. And while she did not have any powers, she was an important character in this arc, so we can confirm that she survived the events and is now living in the Flower Capital with Hiyori once again.
In the rest of this article, to understand why Toko is as important as she is, we have decided to tell you her whole story so that you know what happened to her. Be careful, though, as there are going to be spoilers present.
Toko was a secondary character, but she is one of the best-known characters from the Wano Country Arc
Toko’s parents died, so she was adopted by Yasuie. One day, she ate a piece of a defective Smiley and started laughing. Yasuie understood what had happened and told her to let him eat the rest of her. He later sold her to the Flowery Capital so that she could earn enough to distribute food to the people of Ebisu who were unable to work.
Toko met Komurasaki, who revealed to her that she was actually Hiyori, the daughter of Kozuki Oden, and she became her kamuro. Toko steals Toad Ointment from Usohachi. She then goes to Sangoro’s banquet to try her lei soba, but Suke spills her bowl on the floor, causing her to cry.
After defeating the thug and her companions, the cook offers her another bowl. The little girl thanks and leaves to join Komurasaki’s procession. Before the procession reaches Kurozumi Orochi’s castle, she sees three men attacking the courtesan and being neutralized by her guard.
Later, she attends the banquet at the castle with Komurasaki, who then sings one of the shogun’s favorite songs. While everyone presents mocks the latter in silence because she believes in Kozuki Toki’s prophecy, Toko doesn’t hold back from her and bursts into laughter, infuriating the shogun, who is about to stab her, but Komurasaki slaps him.
Orochi, further annoyed, transforms and prepares to punish the woman, while O-Robi tries to bring Toko to safety but is reached by Orochi’s Courtyard Guardians. Brook distracts them by posing as a ghost, which knocks out the little girl while the archaeologist attacks them.
When Kyoshiro seemingly fatally wounds Komurasaki, the shogun decides to tear Toko to pieces, blaming what happened on her annoying laughter. At that point, Nami unleashes Zeus’ lightning bolts on Orochi. Later, she is let go in the pleasure district. Since the shogun has ordered Kamazo to murder Toko, Komurasaki takes her away from her, and her assassin pursues them to the Ringo region.
Here the woman cries for help, and therefore Zoro stands between them. The latter, despite Gyukimaru continuing to attack him, agrees to help the two and engages in a duel with the assassin. The monk takes the opportunity to attack, but the pirate avoids him. However, he is pierced by one of Kamazo’s two scythes, which he then uses as a third sword with which he defeats the opponent.
The latter falls to the ground defeated, and Gyukimaru walks away while Zoro falls unconscious, and Hiyori helps him, taking him to a house in the area of Ringo’s cemetery.
When the swordsman wakes up, he hurries to find Gyukimaru to retrieve his sword, but the woman holds him back and, offering him some food, Toko reveals that she has stolen some oil capable of healing the wound suffered in the shoulder.
On the other hand, the woman tells the swordsman about the warrior monk and her personal goal: to find her older brother Kozuki Momonosuke. Toko witnesses Hiyori’s happiness when Zoro reveals that he is her friend. Shortly thereafter, Brook comes across the house where the three are, with which he shares the information in his possession.
Among these, there is also the arrest of Tonoyasu, sentenced to death, so Toko runs towards Rasetsu, followed by the others. The four reach the prison just in time to see her execution, so Toko approaches her father’s body, and while everyone orders her to leave, Orochi shoots her, but Zoro and Sanji save the child.
The swordsman entrusts the girl to the cook, who X Drake attacks in animal form. Sanji then gives her to Usopp, who runs away. Having escaped the clashes, together with Usopp, Brook, and Nico Robin, she gets on a boat that leaves the flowery capital, on which he falls asleep. A few days later, he reaches Amigasa, where he overhears the allies discussing the plan to reach Onigashima.
The day before the battle, he witnesses the creation of the tombs of Pedro and Yasuie. She then participates in the festival of fires together with Tengu Yama Hitetsu, who explains that it is a way to honor the dead by lighting a bonfire that can reach heaven; Toko asks if her father is also seeing him and the man claims he is convinced, as well as being sure that Yasuie will be eager to know what will become of her and her country.
Hitetsu then asks her if she’s having fun, and she confirms. When it comes time to prepare the sky lanterns, she hopes that the wish she wrote in hers will come true for her.
During the final moments of the fire festival, Toko asks Hitetsu to confirm that her father was an important man, who knew that if they caught him, they would kill him, so she doesn’t understand why he got caught on purpose. Hitetsu replies that Yasuie has given the country a new opportunity because, without her sacrifice, the light of hope would be extinguished, explaining that she gave her life to give their nation a future in which she could live peacefully.
Toko thus thinks back to when Yasuie ate the remaining part of the defective Smiley she had bitten off shortly before and decides to change her message on the lantern, writing “thank you, dad” instead of “I want to see you dad” asking Hitetsu what he thought.
The latter is moved and states that it is the greatest honor for a warrior. They then listen to the speech broadcast across the country of Wa in which Momonosuke introduces himself as the new legitimate shogun. A week later, she witnesses Luffy and Zoro awaken while she listens to Nami read. She later shares a bath with the latter, Shinobu, Hiyori, Carrot, Kiku, Tama, Speed, and Komachiyo, pointing out how hot the water is. She then participates in the festivities.
A few days later, the Straw Hat Pirates, ready to resume their journey, say goodbye. Toko then starts playing the shamisen together with Hiyori, and she witnesses Momonosuke arrive, unaware that the pirates have already left the castle. She then emphasizes the fact that they are alone. Shortly after, Hiyori and Toko play the shamisen in the auditorium, where the school teacher tells the story of the battle of Onigashima.
