Jujutsu Kaisen: How Powerful Is Jiro Awasaka & What Is His Innate Technique?
The Shibuya Incident is heating up in the anime adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen, and the real battles, which took place after Gojo was sealed, finally started. While there will be many interesting battles and characters in this arc, we will focus on the curse user Jiro Awasaka, who looks like a Daruma doll in this article. In this article, we will discuss Jiro Awasaka’s powers and abilities, as you will find out what his Innate Technique is and just how powerful he is as a character.
Jiro Awasaka was a minor character, but he proved to be an interesting challenge because of his Innate Technique
As we’ve said, the Shibuya Incident Arc is slowly heating up, and the battles are just beginning. Initially, we saw Jiro Awasaka in the company of Ogami and her “grandson,” but when Yuji, Megumi, and Ino arrived at the top of the tower where the three of them were, they split up. Ino remained to defeat Ogami and her “grandson,” while Megumi and Yuji went to face Jiro, who was also holding two of the nails that kept the vails in place. Using Megumi’s Shikigami and the string given to them by Maki Zenin, they managed to lure Jiro off the tower, where they continued their fight.
Yuji and Megumi gave it their best, and while they could hit Jiro, they didn’t do any damage to him, which seemed strange, as the two of them gave it their best. They clearly overpowered Jiro, who could only cut Yuji’s torso despite his agility and hidden knife, which dealt insignificant damage to the young jujutsu sorcerer.
At one point, Megumi realized something was wrong, especially when he landed a relatively weak, accidental hit to Jiro’s head that left a solid bruise. The bruise was not enough to defeat him, but it was the first wound they inflicted on the guy despite beating him up properly. So, what actually happened there?
As we’ve said, Megumi realized something was wrong, and he suddenly summoned his Shikigami rabbits and surrounded Jiro with them while the two of them prepared their next moves. Megumi realized that Jiro’s technique diminished the effects of their attacks. He initially believed that it was complete nullification, but he then used a bluff only to find out that Jiro was afraid of Gojo, which meant that it wasn’t complete nullification; Gojo could destroy Jiro, so there was a thing to it.
He then deduced that his Innate Technique must have an inverse effect on their attacks, and he was right. Jiro’s Innate Technique is called Inverse, and it reverses the power of the attacks he receives. So, the stronger the attack, the less damage it does, as the power is inverted. The same goes vice versa: the weaker the attack, the more damage it deals. Itadori stipulated that they could kill him with a flick to the head, but Megumi corrected him while he was theoretically correct.
Namely, Megumi deduced that there must be a certain limit – both minimal and maximal – that this technique has; otherwise, the pressure of simply breathing would kill Jiro immediately. Yuji agreed with that conclusion. After realizing this, they released Jiro and proceeded to attack him.
They tricked him into believing they would go all out on him with their finishing moves, which made Jiro quite enthusiastic. Why? Well, he believed that they would give it their all and that it would do absolutely no damage to him, after which they would be too weak to properly fight him, which, in turn, would allow him to kill them easily. But that’s not how it happened.
While it did seem that they went in for the kill, it was actually a trick to distract Jiro while Toad, Megumi’s frog Shikigami, attacked him with a weak attack, which dealt a lot of damage. Jiro then lost his focus, allowing Yuji and Megumi to simultaneously land blows that greatly damaged the guy. And while he was resilient enough to resist them for a while, his secret was now uncovered, and the rest of the fight was quite easy.
Ultimately, Yuji was the one who finished him. Jiro went at him, and Yuji started to counter with his full power, but he actually only used this attack to block Jiro’s attack, which was successful. Jiro was confused and soon realized that it was over for him. As the finishing move was over, Yuji used a simple punch to the head to knock Jiro out, which is how this battle ended.
As you can see, Jiro Awasaka was a fairly powerful curse user. Of course, he was not a top-tier fighter, but he was strong enough to resist both Yuji and Megumi for a while, all thanks to his very specific Innate Technique, which made him such a dangerous opponent. He was afraid of Gojo, as he realized that the young boy (at the time) could obliterate him. All the others? Nah, he did not seem to care much for them. This is why he returned after Gojo was sealed because he had finally regained his freedom (or so he thought).
Before this, he was a skilled and dangerous assassin known for his particularly brutal execution methods.
So, what happened to Jiro later? The boys wanted to interrogate him but failed to do so as Jiro was unconscious. They ended up leaving him there as they had to save Ino and continue their fight. Akutami never revealed what happened to him in the story, but since we know that the boys did not kill him, we assume that he was imprisoned after the incident.
Akutami is known for not caring too much about his characters, but sometimes, the whole lack of care was simply ridiculous. Jiro Awasaka probably survived, and he is still considered to be alive. Still, we don’t really know where he is or what happened to him, and knowing where the plot is at this moment, it doesn’t seem likely that we will ever gain a proper answer to this question.
