Jujutsu Kaisen: Is Choso a Good Guy or a Villain? His Affiliation Explained!
Choso is a powerful character from the Jujutsu Kaisen series and is the leader of the nine Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. He is, thus, a materialized cursed object who was initially a villain in the series before switching sides after realizing the truth. During the Shibuya Incident, Choso fought Yuji Itadori, and after an epic battle, he ultimately succeeded in defeating him, but he decided to spare his life. After that, he went through an existential crisis that resulted in him realizing something important. Since that moment, Choso has changed his loyalties, and in this article, we will explain whether he is a good guy in the series or not.
Is Choso (now) a good guy?
A moral evaluation of Choso is not something that we can provide you with easily. Namely, there are several factors that we actually have to consider here. First, he is a cursed spirit, and it is known that cursed spirits are generally not fond of people. Secondly, he was a villain up until the very end of the Shibuya Incident, so that also has to be taken into account. On the other hand, his loyalties always were with his family more than anyone else, and ever since he realized that Itadori was his brother, he completely changed his story.
As for the first factor, we’ve seen many cursed spirits in the series. Sure, those who did not have a high level of consciousness were evil and prayed on humans, but there were also many of them who were fully sentient in that aspect. Choso was among them. And while Mahito was the only one among them who openly hated humans and killed them for his own sadistic pleasure, the others – while wanting to eliminate humans and create a world for cursed spirits to rule over – didn’t invest themselves that much. Sure, Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon would all kill a human without even thinking about it, but they did not hate them actively like Mahito, and Choso was among them; he has a body count, but he did not hate them actively.
Still, he was aligned with them, and as their ally, he did kill; that is certain. He did not care for the humans and he agreed to Mahito’s and Kenjaku’s plan, so this is something we definitely cannot ignore here. He was evil and he was a villain, we cannot hide that fact, but unlike others (especially Mahito), Choso had something “human” in him, even if it was only his ability to think rationally and to form emotional bonds with other characters as he did with his siblings. And this is a redeeming quality for him.
Namely, Choso always put his family in front of everyone, and he joined the villains primarily because that allowed him a chance to avenge them by killing Itadori. He cared for his brothers a lot, and if he had to choose between his “allies” and his family, he would choose the latter without a doubt. This is why he immediately attacked his former ally when he realized that Itadori was his brother and soon deduced the truth behind Pseudo-Geto. As an older brother of Itadori’s, he had the need to protect him, and that is what he decided to do. He completely ignored the fact that Yuji had killed two of their brothers and put his family first, switching sides and becoming one of the good guys.
So, what does this reveal about Choso? Well, he cannot be labeled as a “good guy,” as he isn’t really, but he is also not a “bad guy” in the traditional sense. He has grown as a character and is now undoubtedly one of the protagonists in the series, which has to be taken into account when considering his story. He is a layered character and discussing him has been fun, and we hope we’ve helped you get a better understanding of Choso and his role in Jujutsu Kaisen.
