Like the Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shibuya Incident Arc, the Culling Game Arc (including its short prequel arcs) will also introduce us to a series of new characters, as well as expand the stories of currently known characters. Both these arcs were large and long, so it doesn’t surprise us that Akutami used them to introduce new characters to the lore. One of these characters is the revived jujutsu sorcerer from the past, Iori Hazenoki. In this article, we are going to tell you all you need to know about him, his powers, and his fate in the series, i.e., what happened to him during the events of the Culling Game.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Iori Hazenoki is a secondary antagonist from Jujutsu Kaisen who appeared during the Culling Game Arc as part of Reggie Star’s group and fought Takaba in the series.
  • He is an ancient jujutsu sorcerer revived by Kenjaku for the purpose of participating in the Culling Game. He and Reggie wanted to kill Megumi, but he was defeated by Takaba.
  • He would later face Kenjaku, who opted to attack him with his cursed spirits, eventually killing him before being forced to face Takaba and being killed by Yuta.

Iori Hazenoki is a jujutsu sorcerer from the past revived by Kenjaku

The Culling Game Arc introduced us to a series of new characters, many of whom were villains revived by Kenjaku for the sole purpose of furthering his own agenda. One of these villains was Iori Hazenoki, an ancient jujutsu sorcerer whom we are going to tell you about here.

As stated, Iori Hazenoki is a character from the past. He was revived by Kenjaku during the Culling Game, and he immediately found an ally in the villainous Reggie Star, joining his group soon after the event actually began. Their first target was none other than Megumi Fushiguro.

The two of them engaged the young jujutsu sorcerer but were ultimately unable to defeat him in battle, as neither Reggie’s nor Iori’s techniques worked. Iori was, at one point, close to landing a fatal attack, but this is when Takaba came and saved Megumi. Iori then had to face the comedian sorcerer, and this was a major issue for him. Namely, Iori simply didn’t know how to fight Takaba (a problem that Kenjaku would also have later), and he had no way of countering his specific fighting style. Whatever he tried, Takaba would either counter him or beat him up.

At one point in the story, Iori simply gave up and decided to leave. Seeing that he could not defeat Takaba’s absurd way of fighting, he simply gave up and left without giving Takaba his points and telling him that he should go and die. He later fought the American soldier after a new rule was introduced, but his final moments happened when he once again met with Kenjaku, the guy who enabled him to come back to life.

The two quickly got in a fight, as Kenjaku summoned Geto’s cursed spirits, which charged at Iori. Iori tried to fight them and started running, but he was eventually defeated and killed by Kenjaku once again. With his story over, we can now tell you a bit about his powers and abilities, which are also important in properly comprehending why Iori Hazenoki is such a specific character.

His Innate Technique is called Explosive Flesh

Now that we have told you about Iori’s story in the Culling Game Arc, we can tell you a bit about his powers and abilities as well. He seems to be a relatively powerful jujutsu sorcerer, although we can confirm that he is not one of the strongest ones in the series, despite being an elite-level fighter.

He has a high amount of cursed energy and is also able to use Reverse Cursed Technique, which makes sense when connected to his Innate Technique, which is called Explosive Flesh. Namely, Iori is able to detach his body parts and use them as bombs, as he is able to detonate them from a distance. In that aspect, it makes sense that he is able to use the Reverse Cursed Technique since it allows him to regenerate his body parts; otherwise, he would quickly lose the advantage he has.

He most often shoots his eyes and his teeth at his opponents, creating powerful explosions. Not to mention that this is creepy on more than one level, but it’s still not the weirdest thing we’ve seen in Jujutsu Kaisen, so Iori is fine in our books.
