God of War Ragnarök developed by Santa Monica Studio, the ninth overall installment in the series was released toward the end of 2022. The game is yet again set in ancient Scandinavia and draws its inspiration from Norse mythology with Kratos and his son Atreus in the spotlight. The game was an instant hit and has received universal acclaim as the best possible ending for the Norse part of the series. With everything said, it’s time to check out how many people play God of War Ragnarök and all other stats related to its player base.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • While the exact number of players currently playing God of War Ragnarök is not known at the moment, we do know that 5.1 million copies were sold in the first week of release alone.
  • This makes God of War Ragnarök the fastest-selling installment and the series and the overall fastest-selling first-party game for Play Station in history.

Why is God of War Ragnarök so popular?

God of War Ragnarök was released on November 9, 2022, it is the second game in the Norse mythology portion of the series and follows God of War released in 2018. It is an overall ninth installment in the series. The setting of the game is similar to that of the 2018 installment, it’s set in a dark world of Scandinavian myths and it is heavily influenced by Norse mythology. The story once again follows Kratos and his son Atreus and their efforts to stop Ragnarök. The game was a much-anticipated sequel to an already near-perfect game and the overall reception in the first few weeks after the release was overwhelmingly positive.

The game’s visuals, storytelling, and mechanics were praised. The overall conclusion was that the game improved significantly compared to the previous installment, and I will use this moment to remind you that the 2018 God of War tied with the original God of War regarding the overall score of quality. So the fact that this sequel managed to outdo the 2018 God of War is no small thing. Upon release, God of War Ragnarök was named Time magazine’s #1 game of the year and received several “most anticipated game” awards.

All of this combined made God of War Ragnarök instant bestsellers and a lot of the player base wanted to see what the fuss was about. God of War has long been considered one of the best game franchises of all time so it’s no wonder that each new sequel generates much interest and popularity. The games are also getting better and better, each new installment improving and introducing new concepts and mechanics to the game (such as playing as Atreus).

Overall it’s understandable that God of War Ragnarök is popular because first and foremost it’s a trending newly-released game that received high scores in almost all relevant categories.

How many people play God of War Ragnarök in 2024

When it comes to the total number of players currently playing God of War Ragnarök we don’t have the exact numbers. This is due to the game being released on PlayStation consoles only at the moment which means that third parties don’t have insight into the actual number of players currently online. We can only make an estimation based on how many copies of God of War Ragnarök sold so far.

God of War Ragnarök sold 5.1 million copies, making it an instant bestseller. In the UK alone Ragnarök sold more physical copies on its first day than any previous God of War title did in its first week. Ragnarök also became the fastest-selling first-party game in PlayStation history.

Going by these numbers, we can conclude that at least 5.1 million people have played God of War Ragnarök so far, with the number likely being even higher since the sales numbers are already a near month old. However, the interest in the game is likely to lessen over time as it gets older. Ragnarök was also released on Play Station 4 & 5 which severely limits its potential player base. The previous installment was eventually ported to PC, it is not known whether this will eventually happen with Ragnarök as well.

PlayerCounter numbers show that at the moment of writing of this article, 12,158 people are playing Ragnarök, but the number is likely much higher and the source of these numbers is unclear.
