Hugh Jackman Discusses His Return as Wolverine:”I Swear To You, When I Said I was Done I Really Thought I Was Done”
We are just weeks away from the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ a film significant for several reasons. It marks the MCU’s first “R” rated movie, introduces Deadpool into the MCU, and features Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine after his on-screen death in ‘Logan.’
Jackman had announced his retirement from the role years ago and reiterated this in numerous interviews. Yet, he is back, starring in a movie expected to redeem the studio after a series of disappointing releases over the past year.
Recently, it came to light that Feige himself discouraged Jackman from reprising his role as Wolverine, fearing it would tarnish the character’s perfect ending in ‘Logan.’ However, through clever plot devices, Jackman can now return without directly impacting the original Wolverine storyline.
Jackman recently sat down with Fandango to discuss his decision to return to the character, especially in light of Reynolds jokingly calling him a liar for not sticking to his earlier statements.
I swear to you, when I said I was done I really thought I was done. But, in the back of my head, ever since I saw Deadpool 1, I was like “Those two characters together…”
Jackman’s return to his superhero role without negating the events of ‘Logan’ is made possible through the concept of the Multiverse, a notion introduced in the MCU some time ago. Given our current Multiverse Saga, it’s fitting that almost any character can be resurrected.
However, this isn’t a typical resurrection. The Wolverine we’ll see in the MCU won’t be the version from ‘Logan’ or the X-Men franchise; instead, it will be a completely different variant.
Based on what we’ve glimpsed in the trailers and exclusive CinemaCon footage, this particular variant of Wolverine is somehow linked to the collapse of his own reality and the downfall of the X-Men, leading to his ostracization. Deadpool will attempt to convince him to join forces in an effort to rescue their respective realities.
Reportedly, this won’t mark Jackman’s final portrayal of the character in the MCU.
