Jennifer Aniston has opened up about why she could never return to her iconic role as Rachel Green from Friends without her late co-star Matthew Perry.

Aniston played Rachel for all 10 seasons of the hit NBC sitcom, which ran from 1994 to 2004.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K. published Thursday, Aniston said, “It would be literally, physically impossible,” when asked about the idea of a remake or sequel.

Perry passed away in 2023 at the age of 54 from the “acute effects of ketamine,” with drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine contributing, according to reports.

“It’s heartbreaking that he had so many demons,” Aniston added. “But boy, for someone who had that much inner turmoil, he sure got to laugh a lot, and that was everything to him.”

Aniston also reflected on the close bond of the Friends cast, which included Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc. The actors were not only close off-screen but also famously negotiated equal, high-figure salaries during the show’s run.

“It completely formed who I was. It was pure joy,” Aniston said, recalling her time on the show. “I looked forward to it every day. I couldn’t wait to get to work. I couldn’t wait to see those people. I couldn’t wait to read the scripts — we’d shoot the show every Friday night, and right after we wrapped, we’d find the new script for Monday morning in our dressing room. I was just as excited to find out what was going to happen as I’m sure the audience was.”

Aniston’s comments make it clear that any Friends reboot or sequel would be impossible without Perry, emphasizing both the emotional and professional bond that defined the show.

It’s touching to see how much the cast meant to each other and how deeply Perry’s loss has affected them. Friends fans might hope for new content, but it’s clear the original chemistry can’t be recreated without him. What do you think? Would you want a Friends reboot under these circumstances?
