Johannes Roberts is back with a chilling new horror film, Primate, set to hit theaters on January 9, 2026, via Paramount Pictures. The movie had its premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 18, and has already received positive reactions from critics.

Primate tells the story of a family vacation that quickly turns into a nightmare. Their adopted chimpanzee, Ben, is bitten by a rabid animal and suddenly becomes dangerously violent, putting everyone at risk. The film explores the terror of a once-loved pet turning against its family in a tense, natural horror setting.

The cast includes Johnny Sequoyah as Lucy, Jessica Alexander as Hannah, and Troy Kotsur as Adam, with supporting performances from Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, and Miguel Torres Umba as the chimpanzee, Ben. Notably, author Stephen King makes a cameo as an animal control officer, though he is uncredited.

Critics have praised Primate for its lean and effective storytelling. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 92% approval rating based on 25 reviews. The website summarized the movie as, “That’s one bad ape, and Primate is one lean, mean, effective chiller.”

With a suspenseful premise and strong performances, Primate promises to be a tense thriller for horror fans. The combination of natural horror and the emotional stakes of a family in danger makes it a standout in the genre.
