Sydney Sweeney Is Riding Into Sleepy Hollow as ‘Hollow’ Reimagines the Legend Through Katrina Van Tassel’s Eyes

Few classic American tales carry as much gothic weight as Washington Irving’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.’ The original story, first published in 1820, centers on schoolteacher Ichabod Crane competing with the brutish Brom Bones to win the affection of Katrina Van Tassel, all while a terrifying Headless Horseman stalks the night. For over two centuries, Katrina has existed largely as a passive figure in that narrative, a prize to be won rather than a person with her own story to tell. That is about to change in a big way.

Filmmaker and writer Lindsey Anderson Beer, best known for directing ‘Pet Sematary: Bloodlines’ and contributing to the ‘Transformers’ franchise, has written a debut novel that puts Katrina Van Tassel at the center of the Sleepy Hollow myth. Beer sold her novel to Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in a preemptive acquisition that reportedly took the project off the market before it could even proceed to auction, as sources say the manuscript generated significant industry competition immediately upon submission.

The project making the biggest noise, however, is the feature film adaptation already moving alongside the book. Sydney Sweeney is set to star in and produce ‘Hollow,’ with Beer writing and directing the adaptation of her own novel, which has been fast-tracked for a fall 2027 publication. The story repositions Van Tassel not as a romantic prize, but as the central figure in a dangerous mystery and a seductive supernatural love triangle, blending gothic atmosphere, psychological intrigue, and erotic thriller elements into a high-concept reinvention of the classic tale.

Beer reimagines Van Tassel from a strong, feminist perspective, combining a gothic environment with a psychological mood and an erotic thriller flavor into a modern reinvention of the original story. Sweeney will be playing the role previously filled by Christina Ricci in Tim Burton’s 1999 film starring Johnny Depp, though that version told the story squarely from Ichabod Crane’s point of view.

The film will serve as the first official project from Sweeney’s newly launched Honey Trap banner, the production company she formed with longtime creative collaborator Kaylee McGregor, who is on board as president of production and development, with the company holding a first-look deal with Sony Pictures. LuckyChap, the banner behind ‘Barbie,’ is also attached to produce alongside Beer’s Lab Brew banner, with the full film package expected to go out to interested studios imminently.

The announcement adds to a remarkable run for Sweeney, who starred in ‘The Housemaid’ alongside Amanda Seyfried, a film that became one of the biggest box office surprises of the year and surpassed $400 million globally. She is also set to appear in ‘The Custom of the Country’ and ‘The Housemaid’s Secret,’ the sequel to that breakout hit. Between gothic horror, psychological thrillers, and period drama, Sweeney appears to be building one of the most distinct genre filmographies of any actress working today.

With the Sleepy Hollow myth getting a long-overdue feminist overhaul and one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actresses stepping in as both star and producer, ‘Hollow’ already feels like one of the most compelling packages of the year.
