Marvel’s ‘Zodiac’ Finally Has a Premise, and It Could Be the McU’s Most Intriguing Spy Story Yet
When Marvel Television kicked off its New York Comic Con panel on October 8, fans weren’t expecting a brand-new live-action series to steal the show. Yet that’s exactly what happened when Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise, revealed ‘Zodiac’, a spy thriller heading to Disney+ in 2028. Beyond the title and a mysterious logo, he gave away almost nothing, calling the project a secret.
The announcement landed at a notable moment for Marvel’s streaming side. ‘Zodiac’ is the first new live-action Marvel series revealed since ‘Ironheart’, arriving as ‘VisionQuest’ closes out the WandaVision trilogy, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ heads into its final season, and ‘Wonder Man’ was canceled after just 1 season. Winderbaum did confirm that casting would begin within weeks and that filming would take place in London in the spring.
Now, fans finally have a clearer sense of what the show is about. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, ‘Zodiac’ will follow a pair of spies who are chasing targets with special abilities. The same report revealed that Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem have been set as the series’ writers.
Deadline also confirmed the show’s timeline, with production expected to begin in 2027 ahead of its 2028 premiere. The premise immediately sets ‘Zodiac’ apart, blending grounded espionage with the superpowered side of the MCU.
The creative team suggests Marvel is taking the spy angle seriously. Cohen and Leshem first met while serving in Unit 8200, the Israeli Intelligence Corps, and have built a reputation for tense, politically charged dramas such as ‘The Gordin Cell’, which was remade in the US as ‘Allegiance’, and the Syrian Civil War series ‘No Man’s Land’.

Leshem is also known as the creator of the original Israeli ‘Euphoria’, which inspired HBO’s adaptation starring Zendaya. Together, the duo has created and produced shows including ‘Valley of Tears’, ‘Trust No One’, ‘Bad Boy’, ‘Traitor’ and ‘Red Skies’.
Winderbaum hinted at NYCC that comic fans would find plenty hidden in the show’s logo, and fans have been decoding it ever since. Several outlets have pointed out that the “A” appears to contain the S.H.I.E.L.D. eagle, sparking theories that the agency could return to the spotlight. Clark Gregg, who played Agent Coulson, even reposted the announcement on Instagram.

The “O” may be even more revealing. According to SlashFilm, it points to the Great Wheel, a secret organization from Jonathan Hickman’s ‘Secret Warriors’ and ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ comics, with 3 missing pieces possibly suggesting the group isn’t fully assembled at the start of the story. Esquire India notes that in the comics, the Great Wheel was founded by Leonardo da Vinci and includes some of the world’s greatest spies, from Hydra figures to Nick Fury.
The name itself carries plenty of history. In Marvel Comics, Zodiac is a cartel of supervillains operating under astrological codenames, first introduced in ‘Avengers’ #72. TVLine notes that if the series adapts elements of ‘Secret Warriors’, it could involve S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra, The Hand, and other organizations tied to a long-running conspiracy to reshape the world.

None of these connections have been confirmed by Marvel. Still, the newly revealed premise of spies hunting people with special abilities leaves plenty of room for those theories to play out, especially in a franchise that has explored espionage before in projects like ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Secret Invasion’. With seasoned spy storytellers on board and casting expected soon, ‘Zodiac’ is quickly shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most intriguing upcoming projects.
