Few movies in recent memory have carried as much pressure as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. While it would be an overstatement to say the future of the MCU rests entirely on this film, its outcome will have a massive effect on the next several years of the franchise. Many fans have wondered whether it can be the full-fledged comeback Marvel has been chasing.

On paper, the hype is undeniable. Advance ticket sales opened nearly 4 months early and have generated approximately $100 million, with early sales reportedly tracking about 65% ahead of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at the same point. Still, presales measure excitement, not quality, which is why every scrap of early feedback is being watched so closely.

Now, fans have their first hint at how the finished film is landing. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ held a test screening last week, with one reaction describing it as “way better than expected.” The report quickly spread across fan accounts, including Avengers Updates.

It’s far from an official statement, and it should be taken with a grain of salt. But it’s exactly the kind of news fans have been hoping to hear for a franchise that needs this movie to be a win.

The buzz didn’t stop there. A leaker later claimed 3 test screenings had taken place, with reactions described simply as good, while another unverified report went further and claimed the film was testing much higher than ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Sneider has a track record of sharing test screening feedback on Marvel projects, both positive and negative. He previously reported that ‘Thunderbolts*’ was considered pretty good by test audiences, while ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ reportedly drew mixed reactions after a public screening in Los Angeles.

That balanced history makes this latest report feel more meaningful. Earlier in the year, Sneider also said the buzz surrounding ‘Doomsday’ was good, even as he noted Marvel had plenty of pickup shoots to complete in post-production. Disney seems confident too. A separate report suggested executives were impressed by the film and believe it will top the box office.

The positive word arrives with tracking already pointing to a massive debut. One firm, Global Box Office, has projected an opening weekend between $260 million and $300 million domestically. That would put it in the same conversation as ‘Endgame’s’ $357.1 million and ‘Brand New Day’s’ $360 million openings.

There is one major complication. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’, and the overlap could cap its opening weekend ceiling given the limited number of premium screens available.

The Russo brothers are directing from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, and the film reportedly runs about 165 minutes. With Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom facing heroes from 3 colliding universes, the scale has never been bigger.

Of course, test screenings can be misleading, and some fans will always find something to criticize. Still, if early audiences are walking out impressed, Marvel may finally have the comeback story it has been waiting for when ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18.

Do the positive test screening reports make you more confident that Avengers: Doomsday will deliver?
