Billy Evans Reportedly Disputes the Director’s Story Behind His ‘You Can See Everything’ Shower Scene
A24’s ‘You Can See Everything’ has become one of the most talked-about documentaries of the year. Co-directed by Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder, in Fielder’s first feature as a director, the film follows disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, in the period before Holmes reported to prison to serve an 11-year sentence.
The meta-documentary has drawn rave reviews and impressive box office numbers. It holds a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 99 on Metacritic, and it grew 25% in its second weekend to earn $19.5 million, pushing its domestic total past $45 million.
Among the film’s many uncomfortable moments, one has generated more buzz than any other. Early in the documentary, Evans appears in a shower scene that includes full-frontal nudity, making the movie’s title feel surprisingly literal.
In a recent interview with GQ, Oppenheim said the moment was Evans’ own idea. According to the director, as the crew drove back from the gym, he told Evans they would give him time to shower, and Evans responded by asking whether they wanted to film him showering.
Oppenheim said he offered to position the camera so Evans wouldn’t be exposed, but claimed Evans didn’t care about being seen naked. The director admitted he was baffled by the choice, speculating that Evans may have been excited by the idea of giving viewers full access. Now a new report is challenging that account. According to TMZ, Evans did not ask the director to film the full-frontal scene, sources told TMZ.
A source close to production told the outlet that Evans disputes the story Oppenheim shared about the controversial moment. The sources described a different version of the conversations around how the scene was filmed, suggesting Evans’ understanding of the situation does not match the director’s recollection.
Neither Evans nor Holmes has publicly commented on the report. Oppenheim has said that, to his knowledge, neither of them has seen the finished film. The shower scene isn’t the only eyebrow-raising moment involving Evans. After Holmes reports to prison about halfway through the documentary, the filmmakers continue following Evans as he adjusts to life as a single dad and aspiring entrepreneur.

At one point, Evans tells Fielder he’s planning to build another company off the back of Theranos. He also boasts that he runs Holmes’ social media while she’s incarcerated, claiming he has power of attorney.
The dispute feels oddly fitting for a documentary so focused on questions of truth. The film’s second half shifts attention to the filmmakers themselves, leaving many viewers unsure about what’s real, including whether Fielder is playing a character.

Oppenheim, who also directed ‘Primetime’, has described the project as an observational vérité documentary built by responding to whatever unfolded in front of the camera. Now, the conflicting accounts surrounding one of its most memorable scenes have added another layer of uncertainty.
The documentary’s popularity has spread well beyond theaters. Fans recently gathered in New York’s Washington Square Park for a Nathan Fielder and Elizabeth Holmes look-alike contest, showing just how much buzz the film has generated. With competing versions of the shower scene story now circulating, the conversation around ‘You Can See Everything’ shows no sign of slowing down.
