Lisa Molinari and What Her Place in ‘VisionQuest’ Says About Marvel’s Plans
‘VisionQuest’ brings back familiar characters from the ‘WandaVision’ trilogy, but its first episode also introduces two new characters who matter to the series. One of them is Lisa Molinari, who works the streets of London alongside Thomas Shepherd, played by Ruaridh Mollica.
For viewers who do not read Marvel Comics, Lisa Molinari may look like a one-off sidekick. The details around her suggest otherwise. She is introduced as a petty thief who happens to be best friends with Thomas Shepherd, better known as Tommy Maximoff.
Lauren Morais and the Casting of Lisa Molinari
The role went to a relative newcomer. Variety reported that Welsh actress Lauren Morais would play Lisa Molinari, a character closely connected to Thomas Shepherd. Morais has previously appeared in ‘Mudtown,’ ‘The Red King’ and ‘The Crow Girl.’
In an exclusive interview, ComicBookMovie.com noted that Lisa is Welsh and from Cardiff. Morais told the outlet that during the fourth round of her audition process, the producer showed her a photo of Lisa with her many arms and her coat.
The performance has also drawn early praise. The same outlet’s review singled out Morais for a standout, career-making turn. That gives the character more weight than a supporting introduction would normally carry.
Lisa Molinari and Thomas Shepherd on the Streets of London
Their partnership is established quickly. In London, Thomas tries to find the owner of a lost watch, and Lisa convinces another man to buy it with her because it is worth far more than Thomas realizes. The two work together to rob people and split the money.
The friendship also gives the show an emotional anchor outside Vision’s story. When Thomas has a panic attack as confusing memories of Vision flood his mind, Lisa is the one who helps him through it. One reviewer described the pair as a duo with impressive chemistry.
That bond is put under pressure almost immediately. Paladin kidnaps Thomas and threatens Lisa, forcing her to stay put while he leaves with her friend. It leaves Lisa with a personal stake in the chase that follows.
The Comic Book Roots Behind Coat of Arms
Marvel Comics readers will recognize the name as belonging to a lesser known figure. Lisa, also known as Coat of Arms, was first introduced in the Young Avengers comics during the Dark Reign saga. She eventually becomes a villain and a member of the Masters of Evil.
Her comic book history already links her to Thomas. Speed and Lisa recognized each other during a clash, revealing they had formed a bond years earlier in juvenile detention. Her coat can also be a powerful tool, and she once used its chains alongside Wiccan and Enchantress to trap Sentry.
The name itself carries some wit. The moniker works as both a literal descriptor and a visual pun. That sets up a clear route for the show to follow if it chooses.
What Lisa Molinari Could Mean for the MCU Future
The series appears to be preparing that route. The trailers show Lisa with robotic arms, and her face glows with a fiery color in one shot. Later episodes are expected to honor her comic persona.
There are open questions about where her loyalties will land. Her path from loyal partner to possible villain is one of the quieter questions hanging over the season. Her presence could also hint that Marvel is planning a Young Avengers project next.
Morais seems to want that story told. She told ComicBookMovie.com she would love to explore Lisa’s future with Tommy. If Lisa does take on the Coat of Arms persona, will her loyalty to Thomas hold, or does ‘VisionQuest’ tell the stronger story by pushing her toward the Young Avengers as an enemy?
