MCU to Introduce Adamantium via Dead Celestial in ‘Captain America 4’: Here’s Why This Is a Game-Changer
This year’s SDCC brought exciting updates for the future of the MCU. The title of ‘Avengers 5’ was announced as ‘Doomsday,’ and it was confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Doctor Doom.
We also received new details and exclusive footage for ‘Thunderbolts,’ ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ and other upcoming projects.
One of the major announcements was related to ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ Giancarlo Esposito has been cast as Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society, a role added during expensive reshoots.
Additionally, it was revealed that adamantium—the powerful metal famous for Wolverine’s claws and skeleton—will have a significant role in ‘Brave New World.’ At the film’s outset, countries are competing for access to adamantium resources. President Ross intends to distribute these resources worldwide and recruits Sam Wilson to assist in rebuilding the Avengers.
Following the announcement, the footage previously shown at CinemaCon 2024 was unveiled. It features a new scene with President Thaddeus Ross discussing the Celestial from ‘Eternals’ and the production of adamantium. We also see Sam Wilson and Joaquin flying together in their Falcon suits. The clip ends with President Ross transforming into the Red Hulk at a podium in front of the White House, with the Red Hulk resembling Ford but sporting yellow eyes and black hair.
Adamantium, a virtually indestructible steel alloy, is denser than vibranium and more effective for drilling. However, its creation is costly and complex, with limited expertise available—according to the comics. The MCU has cleverly circumvented this by attributing the metal’s origins to the Celestials.
Several versions of adamantium exist, including Proto-Adamantium, True Adamantium, and Adamantium Steel, all of which are incredibly powerful.
So far, adamantium has not been addressed in the MCU. While the metal appeared in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ it was set in a different universe—Earth-10005. In that movie, Deadpool acquires adamantium katanas, but the Wolverine variant with an adamantium skeleton does not belong to the Sacred Timeline either.
Before the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Kevin Feige mentioned that the MCU’s exploration of mutants would begin with this film. The introduction of adamantium in the MCU further supports this, given the metal’s strong ties to the X-Men and comic book lore.
Adamantium was infused into Wolverine’s body, rendering his skeleton and claws nearly indestructible. It was also used to create Captain America’s shield, which has only been damaged or destroyed on five occasions. This suggests we might see some connection to that in the future.
