Antispiral vs. Goku: Who Would Win in a Fight?

Son Goku of Dragon Ball is such a powerful character that he has, over the years, become a reference point for comparison with other characters. We all know the “But can he beat Goku?” line, which shows that a character’s strength is measured by whether he can defeat Son Goku or not. This is why Goku is so often the subject of our comparisons and why he is going to be featured in this comparison as well. As far as his rival is concerned, we have opted for Antispiral, a very powerful character from the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann anime series. In this article, we are going to try to uncover who would win in a fight between the two.

Although powerful, the Antispiral is beatable and would, thus, lose to Goku in his Perfected Ultra Instinct Mode. Before Goku unlocked this mode, the Antispiral would’ve won their clash, but since this transformation brought Goku to the level of a God of Destruction, he would certainly find it in him to defeat the Antispiral in direct combat.

Now that you have the short version of the answer, the rest of the article is going to be divided into three sections, with the first two introducing the characters, their powers and their abilities. In the end, we’re going to give our final verdict and explanation on why Son Goku would win against Antispiral.

Antispiral and its powers

Antispirall is the main antagonist of the Gurren Lagann anime series. Gurren Lagann, or Tengen Toppa Guren Ragan, is a Japanese animated television series from Studio Gainax co-produced by Aniplex and Konami. The twenty-seven episodes aired on Japan’s TV Tokyo channel from April 1 to September 30, 2007.

Antispiral is so advanced that it is practically godlike (although it is not actually a deity, just a being similar to one). The only reason it does not annihilate its enemies with ease is its philosophy of “absolute despair.” The remarkable powers of the Antispiral include:

  • Unarmed Combat: Although not shown in the anime, the Antispiral embodiment displays some hand-to-hand combat skills in the compilation film. It can also project tendrils from its body to impale enemies.
  • Probability Change: Antispiral is able to change the probability of something happening. This means that Antispiral and its constructs are able to perform attacks that cannot be blocked, as the probability of them being blocked is simply wiped out.
  • Dimensional Maze: Antispiral is able to trap sentient beings in a maze of parallel universes to incapacitate them.
  • Field of Death Spiral: An Anti-Spiral defense mechanism that projects a water-like field of Anti-Spiral energy that drains Spiral energy from all nearby life forms extremely quickly, converting them to more Anti-Spiral energy.

Along with the above-mentioned powers and abilities, Antispiral is also capable of summoning certain constructs, which make it even more powerful. They are:

  • Granzeboma: When the Dai Gurren crew summons Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann by sheer force of will, Antispiral manifests an equivalent mecha of its own, the Granzeboma. This mecha is larger than a galaxy and can easily match and even surpass its counterpart.
  • Ashtanga: A fearsome anti-spiral warship that looks like a collection of stone faces. Armed with probability-altering missiles, defended by probability-negation shields, able to grab and throw small planetoids, and equipped with a swarm of smaller ships in the shape of hands or feet, these huge ships are more than a match for any Spiral force.
  • Mugann: Digital-looking ships manifested by the Anti-Spiral Messenger from nowhere. Mugann are usually armed with powerful lasers and robust energy shields that repel most attacks. When destroyed, they turn into a cloud of explosive pixel-like cubes. There are many types of mugann. Simple Mugann usually attack in swarms, while the largest Mugann can reach the size of a large warship.

It is not known what the Anti-Spiral is capable of outside of its dimension, but within it, it is almost omnipotent. He is able to change the laws of physics, control space and create matter from nothing, all without the use of spiral energy. However, he seems to be able to move freely between the Antispiral and our dimensions, and even create illusions in our dimension.

Antispiral looks like a black silhouette with white empty eyes. The image on the body changes quite often: it may be in plain black, may look like part of dark gray brickwork, etc. Before dying, the Antispiral changes its color scheme, becoming either yellow, then blue, then green. As you can see, Antispiral can change its appearance, including its size, so it’s exact height is not known, as it can change with relative ease.

Son Goku and his powers

Son Goku is the main protagonist of the manga Dragon Ball, and their animated adaptations, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z / Dragon Ball Kai, then Dragon Ball Super, as well as the alternative animated sequel to the first two series, Dragon Ball GT. An orphan exiled from the defunct planet Vegeta, he lands on Earth where he grows up with his adoptive grandfather. His adventure begins the day he meets Bulma, a young adventurer, who invites him to look for the Dragon Balls.

He is an expert in martial arts, having been taught the style of the Turtle School; he is known to be close to a prodigy, managing to learn techniques and levels of strength that other individuals would take time to learn. He even knew how to use skills such as reading minds without even knowing how to do it. Goku has been shown to use different parts of his body to help him in combat, such as shooting a Kamehameha with his feet, using his eyes to launch a ki laser beam in the Frieza Saga among other examples.

Son Goku is a born martial arts expert and fan, managing to read his opponents’ movements and get used to his attacks and speed. Usually, in combat, Goku reserves large amounts of strength and restrains himself to the point of apparently lowering his ki level to absurdly low points in order to conserve energy, however, he also demonstrated the ability to unleash his full power just in the nick of time, when he launched a physical attack.

As a Saiyan, Goku is able to use the Saiyan Power, which allows him to surpass his strength whenever he takes large amounts of damage or fatal wounds. Goku being an alien also has enhanced senses of smell, taste, and sight, which further enhances his combat senses. Goku’s body is much more durable than normal human beings, being essentially invulnerable to all Earth-made weapons.

However, while he is naturally durable thanks to his Saiyan physiology, he has limits, as other powerful beings like himself can hurt, and potentially kill, him if he doesn’t defend himself properly. Also compared to most humans, including those trained in the ki arts, Son Goku possesses a great deal of strength, speed, and stamina.

For example, when he was a young child, he could lift a car over his head and throw it with ease, and during his training with Kame-Sennin, Goku could push massive rock formations that would at least weigh over 100 tons. At the height of his strength, he displayed the ability to destroy mountains, islands, and even heavily damage entire planets with physical force alone.

For speed, he displayed supersonic speeds even faster than light when he reached the Saiyan Saga. By the time he became a Super Saiyan God, his speed had reached speeds massive than the speed of light, and his physical strength was enough for one of the shockwaves from his punches to be felt throughout the universe, damaging incalculably and destroying many planets and stars, up to this point, just four hits between Beerus and Goku are enough to completely destroy the universe.

Goku usually uses techniques based on ki, using them in a fight as support, defense, and attack such as the Kamehameha, these are performed through the control and mastery of ki, born from the creativity and skill of the character. Son Goku is one of the strongest characters in the series, rivaling Vegeta for the position of the most powerful Z Warrior and Universe 7 warrior.

Antispiral vs. Goku: Who wins?

The first thing we have to clarify here is – no, the Antispiral is not omnipotent. In its dimension, it is close to being omnipotent, but outside of it, its powers are severely limited in comparison. It is still quite powerful, but nowhere near the level of an omnipotent being. People often think that, but the Antispiral was ultimately defeated by a Gundam-style robot and that certainly doesn’t make one omnipotent. Now that we’ve demystified this, we can continue.

The issue here is whether Goku is powerful enough to stop Antispiral. As far as it is known, it doesn’t take anything special to actually defeat the Antispiral. You have to be there, you have to fight it but if you manage to overpower it, like Simon and the company in the original, it will die and even be destroyed along with its universe. Anyone who would be able to surpass Antispiral’s power would be able to defeat it so there’s really no special condition that has to be met. This makes it a lot easier for Goku, but still – can he do it?

Had we done this comparison several years ago, we would’ve said no. At the time, Goku’s transformations were not on that level; remember, he got his ass whooped by Beerus the first time they met. Since then, Goku has worked hard and with him mastering Perfected Ultra Instinct, even Beerus admitted that Goku could defeat him now (maybe). Why is Beerus so relevant? Well, as far as we’ve come to understand, he is one of the two most powerful characters behind the Omni-King Zen’o and that is why he is such a good reference point.

Now, if Goku could defeat Beerus in this form, that means that he could also defeat Antispiral; there is absolutely nothing to suggest that the Antispiral could defeat Beerus, let alone Zen’o, as some fans suggest. This is why we think that, at this point in time, Goku could actually defeat the Antispiral. It would be an amazing fight with Goku giving it his absolute best, but he would ultimately be able to defeat him.

In the end, the Antispiral is one of those ridiculously overpowered characters whose powers work well within his own universe and are lauded by the fans who don’t really get how someone who gets defeated by a robot cannot be omnipotent and omniscient, but in any form of comparisons, its powers are significantly weaker.
