James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to the 2009’s original movie which is still the highest-grossing movie of all time, will finally see the day’s light this December. The first teaser trailer was released last week exclusively in theaters before the projections of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and earlier this week it was released on YouTube and other internet platforms.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Avatar: The Way of Water teaser trailer was watched no less than 148.6 million times only in the first 24 hours, and that’s a lot. One interesting thing is that this number doesn’t count all the people who watched the trailer in theaters before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which grossed $450 million worldwide during its opening weekend. 23 million viewings of the trailer only came from China.
Back in 2019, the first trailer for Star Wars; The Rise of Skywalker was watched 111 million times, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was watched 120 million times, and the trailer for The Force Awakens was watched around 112 million times, and let’s remember that that was the first Star Wars after 10 years. Still, the most-watched trailer of all time in the first 24 hours is Spider-Man: No Way Home with more than 355 million.
Written, produced, edited, and directed by James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of the four planned sequels of the original Avatar movie which grossed $2.7 billion and thus became the highest-grossing movie of all time. The sequel was originally expected to arrive in 2014, but after numerous pushed backs and waiting for the moviemaking technology to be advanced enough, the sequel is now coming 13 years after the original movie.
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald will reprise their respective roles from the first Avatar movie, and Sigourney Weaver will return in a different role after her character was killed off. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones joined the sequel as newcomers.
After 13 years of waiting, Avatar: The Way of Water will finally be released on December 16, 2022.
