The Elves were not evil

The Elf Tribe was, as we have said, a powerful ancient race of people that lived in the Forsaken Realm within the Clover Kingdom. They were a peaceful nation and were worshiped as gods because of their powers. Namely, all elves possessed immense magical power, more than any other race.

The humans began to fear and desire power, so they wanted to eliminate them, which they eventually did. Because of this animosity, children in the Clover Kingdom are taught a lie that the Elves are actually evil demons who want to rule the world and take all the magical power for themselves; their leader was Licht, who turned himself into a demon but was stopped by the first Wizard King, according to this piece of false history.

Elves were the only people capable of fully using magic stones. They also have a number of forbidden magic spells that require large amounts of mana, including the creation of a third eye and the summoning of a demon god. Licht’s magical swords later became the Anti-Magic Swords. With the eradication of their tribe, the Elves disappeared as a race, but their future was not that straightforward.

Known members of the Elf Tribe included Licht, Patolli, Rhya, Vetto, Fana, Drowa, Lira, Reve, Ronne, Eclat, Rossa, Ado, Charla, Ratri, Kivn, Baval, Tetia, Lufulu, and Dryad.

Zagred orchestrated the massacre of the Elves in Black Clover

The story of the massacre of the Elves begins with Tetia and Licht. Namely, one day, a long time ago, Tetia, the princess of the Clover Kingdom, snuck out of her castle and was caught in a magical tornado. Her brother, Lemiel Silvamillion Clover, rushed to her aid, but so did the Elf Licht, and the two of them managed to free her from the magic tornado, with Licht catching her as she fell. The two of them quickly became friends, and after spending more and more time together, the two of them fell in love with each other.

After Tetia became pregnant with twins, the two decided to marry. Now, this would have been a grand event, and both Licht and Tetia hoped that it could unite the Elves and the humans. Lemiel also collaborated with the Elves to create a special magical tool that would distribute magical power equally among the peoples, ultimately leading to a more just and balanced world. This proves that the Elves were never really evil and that they never wanted to steal all the magical power for themselves and rule over the world, as the Clover Kingdom children were taught. The pair informed their respective peoples of the marriage and the date but kept the location hidden.

And while everything seemed idealistic, the situation was more complex. Namely, the powerful devil Zagred had plans of his own and wanted to create a five-leaf clover grimoire, which could only be created when an Elf fell into absolute despair. To achieve his goal, Zagred possessed one of the Clover Kingdom’s ministers and started to work on changing the humans’ opinion about the union between the Elves and the humans, a feat in which he would ultimately succeed.

Zagred executed his plan on the day of the wedding. He had the king summon Lemiel, whom he had restrained so he could later blame him for the attack. After that, he took the magic tool and proceeded to the wedding to carry out the next part of his homicidal plan. At the wedding location, Licht and Tetia exchanged their vows, as a barrier formed around the location and a series of Light Magic spears started raining down on them, killing them; they could not fight back, as the magical tool was also active, draining their powers.

The humans observed the massacre from a cliff, happy about the success of their plan and completely ignoring the fact that Tetia, one of their own, was killed. The elves blamed Lemiel for the attack, as Zagred planned, because of his absence and the fact that Light Magic was used on them, but it was just an imitation created by Zagred’s Kotodama Magic.

In the meantime, Secre Swallowtail discovered Lemiel and freed him, after which the two of them made their way to the wedding location, hoping that they could reach it in time to stop the bloodshed. But they were too late.

Seeing his beloved dead, Licht fell into total and utter despair, which corrupted his four-leaf grimoire and created a dark, five-leaf clover grimoire. Zagred was waiting, hovering over Licht, to take possession of Licht’s body once he’d turned into a Dark Elf, but Lemiel’s arrival gave Licht hope, and he managed to fight off Zagred’s attempt. He did not manage to fight off the negative mana filling him, which is why he used his magical stones to turn himself into a powerful demon, thus destroying Zagred’s hopes of taking over his body. Before completely transforming, he asked Lemiel to kill him.

A fierce battle ensued, and it was only thanks to the fact that Secre discovered that Tetia and one of the twins were alive that Lemiel managed to succeed. Secre healed them and then rushed to Lemiel’s side, giving him the magical tool with which he stopped the demon’s attack. Licht then regained control of his body for a moment, which Lemiel used to create a large blade, which he plunged into Licht, killing both the demon and his friend. This is how the massacre of the Elves was executed and finished in a brutal and treacherous way, but Zagred did not fully succeed in his plans.

The giant demon Lich fell, his body dissolving completely; in the end, all he left was a giant skeleton. The five-leaf clover grimoire was atop the skull, and Zagred, wanting to complete his plan, went to steal it but was ultimately stopped by Sacre, who managed to seal him in an Eternal Prison. However, before being completely sealed away, Zagred managed to cast the Noad Nephesh, a powerful reincarnation spell that suspended the dead souls of the Elves, stopping them from entering the afterlife and allowing them – along with Zagred himself – to reincarnate in the future. Why did he do this?

Well, the Elves never found out the truth behind the massacre, so Zagred knew that, once they came back, they would despise the humans and would want to have their revenge, which is what actually happened in the present timeline of Black Clover, as the Elves were reincarnated by Patolli, now a Dark Elf. Sacre would also end up transforming Lemiel’s body into a statue, so he could also wake up again in the future to stop the war, which was a very wise thing to do based on the circumstances.

The humans would later keep the stolen magic for themselves and fabricate history to make the Elves the villains while giving Lemile the posthumous title of the first Wizard King. And this is the whole story of the massacre of the Elf Tribe in the Black Clover manga and anime.
