Blue Exorcist: What Is the Divine Summoning & How Is It Related to Izumo?
After many years, Blue Exorcist is finally back, but that is, more or less, old news. The series’ third season has been running for a while now and we on Fiction Horizon have been covering the series for you as you might expect. In this article, we are going to cover an interesting aspect of the series that is related to the Kamiki Clan. The topic of this article is going to be the Divine Summoning technique, a very important technique related to the important clan. In this article, we are going to tell you everything about the technique, what it does, and how it is related to Izumo Kamiki.
The Divine Summoning technique is related to the Inari Shrine and the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit
It is impossible to overstate Tamamo Kamiki’s historical significance in the story because she was a very strong figure. She was presented as the chief priestess of the Inari Shrine and one of the more influential Kamiki family members—a family notorious for intermarriages with demons. She felt a deep connection to the evil spirit, the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, which was imprisoned inside the shrine. Tamamo was able to subdue the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit for the most part of the time until one night, the beast broke free and took possession of Tamamo.
But, while this is a story that we’ve already written about, it was an important moment, and we decided to use it as an introduction. Namely, the story of the Divine Summoning technique is related to both Tamamo Kamiki, as well as the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, which is why the introduction we used was a fitting one. So, what is the Divine Summoning?
Well, the Divine Summoning technique is a general technique of the Kamiki Clan. It doesn’t have any offensive value, but it is related to the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, a powerful demonic spirit connected to the Inari Shrine and the Kamiki Clan. Divine Summoning is basically a ritualistic dance performed in ritual robes and with a fox mask. It is related to the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit and is used to assimilate and appease it; the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit is trapped within the Life-Takin Stone, in case you’ve forgotten that piece of information.
And that is, more or less, the gist of it. The Divine Summoning doesn’t seem to have any other purpose, and beyond its connection to the powerful and vengeful Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, it is basically useless. But it is beautiful, and it is a truly important part of the lore, especially Izumo’s story, which is why we have decided to tell you about it here. Let us now see how it is connected to the characters of Blue Exorcist.
Izumo is the only living user that knows Divine Summoning
As we have said, the Divine Summoning technique is related to the Kamiki Clan and the Inari Shrine. Its origins are related to the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, and since the Inari Shrine is related to the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit, and the Kamiki Clan is related to the Inari Shrine… well, you can see for yourselves how all of them are connected.
And while there probably have been many known users of the Divine Summoning technique, the series has revealed only two of them. The first one is Tamamo Kamiki, Izumo’s mother, who was the chief priestess of the Shrine in the series until the dreaded incident and her capture at the hands of the Illuminati. Of course, Tamamo’s story shows why she cannot perform it anymore.
Since the technique seems to be passed down from generation to generation, we can actually confirm that Izumo Kamiki, one of the main characters in the story, also knows it and is actually able to use it, as the series demonstrated. The technique is, thus, an important part of Izumo’s life, both personally and professionally, which is why we have decided to explain this connection to you. This concludes our story on the Divine Summoning technique of Blue Exorcist.
