‘Demon Slayer’: Who Is Urami? Meet Hantengu’s Last Emotion Demon!

The Upper-Rank Four of the Twelve Kizuki, Hantengu was a very peculiar Demon who seemed to be a complete coward unworthy of his status but proved himself to be a very powerful enemy. Hantengu has finally come into the spotlight in the Swordsmith Village Arc, and fans have gotten a glimpse into this powerful Demon’s powers and abilities, including his ability to create the so-called Emotion Demons. We have met four of them (five if you count Hantengu), and just when it seemed that Zohakuten was the last one, another creature appeared. Urami is the embodiment of Hantengu’s Resentment, and he was the final Emotion that protected Hantengu before Tanjiro killed off the Upper-Rank Four, and in this article, we are going to tell you all you need to know about him.
Urami is Hantengu’s sixth and final Emotion Demon, who appeared near the end of the Swordsmith Village Arc. He is actually the embodiment of Hantengu’s resentment and seems to be a last-ditch effort by Hantengu to save himself in dangerous situations; it is implied that Urami is actually able to use the combined powers of all the other Emotion Demons. His appearance caused confusion because he actually looks like Hantengu but bigger and more menacing.
The rest of this article will focus on Urami and his powers in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba series. We know how peculiar Hantengu is as a villain and in this article, one of his peculiarities is going to be explained. His ability to multiply himself by dividing himself into several powerful Demons, each of whom is an embodiment of one of his emotions, was very intriguing, and that is why we will talk about its final manifestation, Urami. This article will contain some spoilers from the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, so be careful how you approach it.
Urami is Hantengu’s final form, his last-ditch effort to survive in a most perilous situation
Now, before focusing on Urami, we first have to explain where Urami comes from and how Hantengu can manifest so many Demons. This is, of course, a result of his Blood Demon Art, which is special compared to others, and that is the main reason he was the Upper-Rank Four of the Twelve Kizuki. Hantengu was able to use his Blood Demon Art to create four clones of himself, each of the clones being a representation of one of his emotions and a powerful standalone Demon. These clones were called Emotion Demons, and there were four main ones (Hantengu himself was the embodiment of Fear):
- Sekido, the manifestation of anger, is constantly irritated and very aggressive. He is quite powerful and also has exceptional speed and reflexes, as well as the ability to fuse with Karaku, Urogi, and Aizetsu into Zohakuten.
- Karaku, the manifestation of relaxation, is the most laid-back of all the clones but nevertheless very dangerous. He is also physically imposing but also has incredible stamina and durability.
- Aizetsu, the manifestation of sorrow, is constantly depressed, negativistic, and cynical to everyone, which aligns with the emotion he represents. His most prominent feature is his durability.
- Urogi, the manifestation of joy, is the happiest and most cheerful among the clones. He is also quite dangerous, though, as he can mimic avian creatures and use their abilities to his advantage in combat, which is why he is also the oddest one on the list.
Sekido could combine himself with the three remaining ones to create the powerful Zohakuten, but he was a special case, as he was actually a combination of other Demons in the series. So, is this all of them? Well, no. Namely, as it was implied, Hantengu seemingly has a last-ditch Emotion Demon he can manifest when his life is in danger. This Demon’s name is Urami, and embodies Hantengu’s resentment towards everyone and everything. This is the Demon that Tanjiro fought in the final episode of Season 3, and we will now tell you everything that is known about him.
Urami, when he actually debuted, caused a problem. Namely, Urami debuted near the end of the arc, as Tanjiro was chasing Hantengu’s main body in order to decapitate the Upper Rank. After receiving Yoriichi’s sword from Haganezuka, Tanjiro proceeded to face the Demon, and at one point, he actually managed to decapitate him, but nothing changed, and Tanjiro observed how the Demon’s tongue read ‘Resentment’ instead of ‘Fear.’ This meant that the Demon that Tanjiro had decapitated was not the real body and that Hantengu was still out there. But why was this so confusing?
Well, when Tanjiro actually beheaded the Demon, it seemed as if he was actually beheading Hantengu, as the Demon looked exactly like Hantengu; he was a bit bigger, but we’ve already seen that Hantengu could change his size. So, it was Hantengu, but it wasn’t Hantengu, which confused everyone. But, unlike the other Emotion Demons, who look nothing like Hantengu, Urami actually looks almost exactly like the main Demon, except that he is larger and more menacing. But, at that moment, the size could be attributed to Hantengu’s powers, and the menacing appearance could be attributed to Hantengu launching an attack.
But it was neither of those. Namely, Urami is almost a literal clone of Hantengu, so it was difficult to distinguish between the two while the fight was going on. Had Urami appeared under less stressful circumstances, the small differences would have been more obvious.
So, as we’ve said, Urami is the embodiment of Hantengu’s resentment. He is a hypocrite, just like all the other Emotion Demons, as he immediately judges Tanjiro and asks him why he is abusing the weak and innocent main body, completely ignoring all the horrible things that Hantengu had done.
He was, in that aspect, as delusional as all the other Demons, but, unlike the others, he actually did resent everyone and everything, especially Tanjiro, because he considered him to be a menacing villain who was abusing a small, weak, defenseless creature (referring to Hantengu).
And while Tanjiro did decapitate Urami immediately, he is not as weak as he seems. His first and principal trait is his ability to change his size; this is why he was much bigger than Hantengu, and while he was able to hide the real body in his chest, where his heart should have been.
It is unknown how large he could become, but he has this ability, yes. Another ability he is supposed to have, although this was just implied as Urami never really got the chance to show his powers in a fight, is the ability to copy and combine the powers and attacks of all the other Demons that Hantengu could manifest.
Now, this would make Urami the strongest Emotion Demon, and it would make sense that Hantengu would leave his best for last, but as we’ve said, Urami never really got the chance to show his powers, so this is all we have at the moment.
