Demon Slayer: Who Is Urogi? Meet Hantengu’s Joy Demon

Share:

Episode 3 of the Swordsmith Village arc of Demon Slayer finally allowed us to see some action between the Demon Slayers and the Upper-Rank demons. The demon in action was Hantengu, who quickly split into four different demons that battled Tanjiro and his allies throughout the latter part of the episode. One of those demons was Urogi, the final demon to showcase his abilities. So, who is Urogi in Demon Slayer?

Urogi is one of the clones of Hantengu and is the one that represents his emotion of joy. As such, Urogi is the most joyful out of all of the four clones and is often seen smiling. He is also the most unique in the sense that he can fly. Urogi also possesses the ability to generate powerful sound waves from his mouth.

One of the things that Tanjiro and the others need to solve concerning Hantengu is how to defeat him while four of his clones are preventing them from finding a solution to the most challenging problem they have faced at this point in the storyline. In that regard, Urogi is one of the challenges they must overcome before they can find a way to defeat the problematic riddle of killing Hantengu.

Urogi’s Background Explained

In the third episode of the Swordsmith Village arc of Demon Slayer, the Demon Slayers finally met their latest challenge in the form of Hantengu, who infiltrated the Swordsmith Village to take down the swordsmiths and destroy the source of the only weapons that are capable of killing demons. In that regard, Hantengu arrived to confuse Tanjiro and Muichiro, as the Mist Hashira didn’t waste time decapitating the Upper-Rank demon. However, they soon found out that decapitating Hantengu only allowed him to produce clones of himself, as he could create four in total.

Urogi is one of the four clones produced by Hantengu and was created when Genya decapitated both Sekido and Karaku. Like all of the other clones, he looks like a young adult male with a muscular body and with long hair. He has gold eyes with the kanji of Upper Rank and Four written on them. He also has the kanji of joy on his tongue. Unlike the other clones, Urogi is the most unique in terms of his appearance because he can mimic birds by using feathered wings and sharp talons.

Due to his status as the manifestation of Hantengu’s emotion of joy, he is the happiest and most joyful out of all four clones as he often wears a smile on his face and can be quite playful in his approach in fighting Tanjiro and the other Demon Slayers. In fact, during the entire battle against the Demon Slayers, he was having fun as he treated it as a game or a source of entertainment rather than something that his life depended on. And he even told Tanjiro that his entire fight with him was delightful.

Unlike the more humanoid bodies of the other clones, Urogi can mimic the attribute and abilities of birds as he has wings and sharp talons. The feathered wings allow him to fly at great speeds that are fast enough to give the Demon Slayers trouble. Meanwhile, his talons are sharp enough to cut through diamonds. The only problem is that Urogi’s body tends to be lighter than the others as he needs to be light for his wings to carry his weight, and this was something that Tanjiro and the others used to their advantage.

Like all other clones, Urogi possesses a unique Blood Demon Art in the form of sound waves that he can generate from his mouth. The sound waves are powerful enough to make Tanjiro suffer and bleed from his nose and ear while momentarily making it harder for him to understand what is happening around him. His flesh manipulation is also superb, as he can still use his severed talons even though they are no longer attached to his body. He produced a mouth from the severed leg to reproduce a sonic attack similar to the one he can use with his main body.

What Happens to Urogi in Demon Slayer?

The events of the Swordsmith Village arc allowed Urogi and the other clones to keep Tanjiro and the other Demon Slayers at bay as they fought to a standstill. It was Urogi who commended Tanjiro for realizing that none of the four clones was the real body of Hantengu. That meant that Tanjiro and the others needed to target the miniature Hantengu that appeared during the battle. However, the four clones were more than a challenge for the trio of Tanjiro, Genya, and Nezuko.

When Mitsuri arrived, the tide of the battle shifted toward the Demon Slayers as she was a powerful Hashira who could take them on alone. That was when Sekido absorbed Urogi and the other clones to create Zohakuten, a demon with the combined strengths of all the clones and could produce dragon-like wooden monsters that he used to protect Hantengu the entire time. Zohakuten, the Hatred Demon, proved to be more than a match for Mitsuri, as she needed to use her Demon Slayer mark to battle him on equal footing.

Tanjiro defeated the miniature Hantengu by decapitating him. However, he discovered this was not the real body as the beheaded Hantengu ran away from the Demon Slayers. Mitsuri was left alone to battle Zohakuten while Tanjiro and the others chased the beheaded Hantengu. That was when Tanjiro realized that the real head of the demon was inside the heart of the beheaded Hantengu. As such, when Tanjiro killed Hantengu by slashing his torso, Zohakuten and Urogi and the other clones died.
