Do Geralt And Yennefer End Up Together In The Books (& Will They In The Show)
One of the major themes that were revealed early on in season 1 of The Witcher is the possible romantic relationship between two of the three central characters, Geralt and Yennefer. While we do know that these characters have feelings for one another, the different circumstances of their lives have made it difficult for them to truly be together. So, do Geralt and Yennefer end up together in the books?
In the final part of the books, Geralt and Yennefer end up together, but they do not exactly get the happy ending that they wanted because of the fact that the end to The Witcher books is open-ended, ambiguous, and open for interpretation. But the fact is that Geralt and Yennefer were on and off for two decades.
The relationship between Geralt and Yennefer is one of the central plots of the entire Witcher story, considering that Geralt openly knows that he has feelings for the sorceress. Meanwhile, Yen herself has feelings for the white-haired Witcher. Then again, because there are different circumstances that take precedence over their relationship, Geralt and Yen never truly got together.
Do Geralt And Yennefer End Up Together In The Books?
The Witcher is a story that is based primarily on a lot of different legends, myths, and lore. In that sense, it is a fantasy story that started out as books, became popular as video games, and eventually got adapted into a Netflix live-action series. And while The Witcher focuses a lot on fantasy and action, one of the central themes of the entire story is the romance between two of the main characters, Geralt and Yennefer.
In the series version of The Witcher, we saw as early as the first season that Geralt and Yennefer have feelings for one another. The sexual and romantic tension between the two was always so palpable, such that they eventually had a series of steamy bed scenes in season one but ultimately had to part ways when they realized that they saw the world differently.
Then again, we also saw that Geralt never forgot about Yennefer and was constantly concerned about the sorceress’s well-being. He was also open about the feelings that he had for Yen, who he was aware was always the love of his life. While Yennefer was never as open as Geralt when it came to her feelings, we can easily infer that she also has feelings for the Witcher.
In season 2, we are yet to see Geralt and Yennefer ending up together and settling down as a couple because of all of the happenings in their lives. With that said, do Geralt and Yennefer end up together in the books?
So, in the books (as is in the series), both Geralt and Yennefer were on and off in their relationship with one another ever since the first day they met. This on and off relationship spanned for more than two decades, as the Witcher and the sorceress both have to fix certain affairs in their own lives and have different goals that they want to achieve on an individual level.
But while they do know for a fact that they are both each other’s biggest love, the fact remains that they need to first take care of the problems that their lives are facing. Particularly, they needed to make sure that Ciri, the third protagonist of the story, gets to live a safe and quiet life away from all of the different forces that were out to get her.
Because both Geralt and Yen had problems of their own on top of the fact that they needed to make sure that Ciri was safe, the on and off relationship between the Witcher and the sorceress continued on until the end of the entire story of The Witcher. It was only until the very end that Geralt and Yen were able to be together. However, what you should also know is that the ending to the romantic story between Geralt and Yennefer isn’t exactly the happy ending that you are expecting.
In the books, Geralt had to quell a riot happening in Rivia, as the townspeople were killing off any non-human. Hesitating to hurt an angry civilian, Geralt was impaled with a pitchfork and was bleeding to death.
Yennefer and Ciri arrive just before Geralt dies. However, this is where the end between the two becomes ambiguous and open for interpretation, as the author was never really clear on what happened between Geralt and Yennefer.
In the books, it was mentioned that Ciri used her powers to transport the two to a mysterious place called Avalon, where they could both heal and then live the rest of their lives together. But that part was never really clear as well because it was only told from Ciri’s perspective, who was believed to be embellishing her story in a way that suited her wish of a happy ending for the two characters.
It was also quite possible that both Geralt and Yennefer died then and there as the Witcher was bleeding to his death. Meanwhile, the mysterious place where they find themselves waking up after the events in Rivia is actually the afterlife.
Whatever the case may be, the fact is that Geralt and Yennefer did end up together in the end, but not in a way that is entirely clear. For some, it was the happy ending they deserved. Meanwhile, for others, it was the kind of ending that best suited the somewhat gloomy atmosphere of The Witcher’s story. All we can say is that neither the books nor the author himself was ever clear as to what truly happened in the end.
In What Book Do Geralt And Yennefer End Together?
As mentioned, Geralt and Yennefer were in the middle of an on and off the relationship the entire story, as that setup spanned from the first book until the final one. However, it was only at the end of the entire Witcher saga that Geralt and Yen truly got together, whether it was in death or in a mysterious place where they could live out the rest of their lives in peace.
The book where Geralt and Yennefer ultimately end up together is Andrzej Sapkowski’s final book in the series, which is The Lady of the Lake. Of course, Geralt and Yen never truly got together until the book’s final scenes, which are still open for interpretation.
Will They End Together In Netflix TV Show?
In the Netflix version of The Witcher, Geralt and Yen were also on and off in terms of their relationship. They were together at one point in season 1 but ended up breaking off from one another shortly after that.
However, we are not sure whether or not the series will follow the books in the sense that they will only end up together at the final portion of the story. But, if we were to use the minor changes in season 2 as an indication of where the show might go, there is a good chance that the showrunners will allow Geralt and Yen to get together earlier than expected.
Do Geralt And Yennefer Have A Child?
If we were to use Ciri’s version of what happened to Geralt and Yennefer in Avalon, there is a good reason to think that they had a child together.
However, because the ending of the books is open-ended, we cannot say for certain that Geralt and Yennefer had a child because, before they were teleported to Avalon, both were infertile. Avalon would have to be a miraculous place to allow infertile people to have a child.
