Does Asta Become a Captain in ‘Black Clover’?

We all know that Asta is the protagonist of Black Clover. Asta is a truly well-written character, but aside from being very powerful, Asta is also unique to the world of Black Clover. Now, fans of the series know that there are numerous things about Asta that we could discuss in this article, from his powers and abilities to his relationships with some of the characters. This article is going to be tied to his abilities somewhat but also to his role in the story. Namely, we know that Asta is a member of the Black Bull squad, which is currently led by Yami (as captain) and Nacht (as vice-captain). Based on what we know about Asta and his powers, can we assume he is also a captain somewhere or will become one in the future? This article will answer that question for you.

As of the time of writing, Asta is not a captain in Black Clover. A squad has only one captain at a time, and Asta is a member of the Black Bull squad, whose current captain is Yami, Asta’s friend, and mentor. The current vice-captain of the squad is Nacht. Asta certainly is on the level of a captain, but with his desire to become the Wizard King, he might completely skip the rank of a captain, so we don’t know if he will ever become one.

As you can imagine, the rest of this article will be dedicated to Asta and his role in the story. We will, of course, expand on the answer we have given you above and give you more details on the squad hierarchies in Black Clover. Asta is a fairly interesting character, and it only makes sense that fans want to know about his position in the lore. Asta is not a captain at this moment, and he might never become one at all

Now, everyone knows that the Magic Knights are the most important organization in the world of Black Clover. They are composed of powerful wizards which are ranked as follows, as per Black Clover Wiki:

2. Grand Magic Knight 「大魔法騎士 Dai Mahō Kishi」
3. Senior Magic Knight 「上級魔法騎士 Jōkyū Mahō Kishi」
4. Intermediate Magic Knight 「中級魔法騎士 Chūkyū Mahō Kishi」
5. Junior Magic Knight 「下級魔法騎士 Kakyū Mahō Kishi」

Now, as everyone knows, the Magic Knights are divided into nine squads. Each of these squads is led by a man known as the captain 「団長 danchō」, and he is also the representative of his squad among the Magic Knights. The structure of these squads and their leaders is, as of the time of writing, as follows:

The captain of a squad has a lot of authority. He gives orders to the members of the squad, he is in charge of leadership and training and also oversees the recruitment of new members.

He can also, once appointed, alter the squad’s insignia and name to a certain degree. The process of being named captain has not been explained in detail, but we assume that it has something to do with a character’s power and moral traits, i.e., his loyalty to protecting those around him. This means that the captains are the best of the best among the wizards in the world of Black Clover.

We also have the Royal Castle Knights and the Royal Knights as members of the hierarchy of the Magic Knights, but they are irrelevant to this article, so we don’t have anything to say about them here.

Now, as we’ve said, Asta is a member of the Black Bull squad, and the squad’s structure is as follows:

As you can see, Asta is currently only a squad member, which answers the main question of this article – Asta is not a captain in Black Clover. Although he is powerful and is the protagonist, his powers are still unrefined, and he still has a lot of space to grow and evolve as a character. In that aspect, it makes sense that he is still not a captain.

Is he worthy of the position? Well, more yes than no, but he will be worthier in the future, without a doubt. Namely, Asta is loyal to the Clover Kingdom and will do whatever it takes to protect his friends and allies. This is why, from a moral perspective, he is a suitable candidate. His powers still need some honing, and he could still use some growth in that aspect, but that will surely happen in his case, knowing how shonen protagonists usually grow in a series.

But will Asta even become a captain? Well, Yami and Nacht would have to die or disappear, which doesn’t seem likely at the moment. But, there is also the fact that Asta doesn’t really want to become a captain – he wants to become the Wizard King. Whether becoming a captain is a prerequisite for becoming the Wizard King is unknown at this moment, but Asta’s case will certainly answer that question for us in the future.

Now, we don’t know what Tabata is planning, but it could very well be that Asta simply skips the position of captain and becomes the Wizard King immediately once the series ends.
