Dragon Ball: Is Kale a Legendary Super Saiyan?

Back in the events of the Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, we saw that there was seemingly another type of Super Saiyan that Vegeta believed was the true Super Saiyan. Dubbed the Legendary Super Saiyan, this non-canon form was more powerful than a regular Super Saiyan and could also overwhelm a Super Saiyan 2. But this form seemingly returned in the events of Dragon Ball Super when Kale was introduced as a berserk Super Saiyan that resembled how Broly acted. So, does that mean that Kale is a Legendary Super Saiyan?
Kale could be a Legendary Super Saiyan, but this form is yet to be truly canon in Dragon Ball. That’s because the term “Legendary Super Saiyan” was never used as a canon term in Dragon Ball. Nevertheless, we know that Kale is Broly’s Universe 6 counterpart in terms of her power and transformation.
Despite the fact that the Legendary Super Saiyan was never confirmed to be a canon form, what we know is that Kale’s power resembles Broly’s own power, and we know that Broly is often referred to as the Legendary Super Saiyan due to his immense power. So, with that said, let’s get to know more about Kale and her status as the Legendary Super Saiyan of Universe 6.
What Is A Legendary Super Saiyan?
When we first heard of the Super Saiyan term back in the events of Dragon Ball Z, this was something entirely new as it was a legend that talked about a powerful Saiyan that was immensely more powerful than any other Saiyan in existence. That was why the Super Saiyan was called a legendary figure that only became true when Goku turned into one.
However, after Goku became a Super Saiyan, the form became commonplace because Vegeta, Gohan, and Future Trunks achieved it as well. This kind of degraded the status of the Super Saiyan transformation in terms of how legendary it is because of the fact that more and more characters were achieving this state. But things changed when the non-canon Broly character was introduced during the events of Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan.
In that movie, Broly achieved a Super Saiyan transformation so strong that it had immense energy reserves that allowed Broly to keep on going. His power was so overwhelming that Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan were no match for him. Because of his berserk state, Vegeta called him the Legendary Super Saiyan. But what exactly is the Legendary Super Saiyan?
Though never canon in Dragon Ball Z due to the fact that Akira Toriyama never had a hand in the Broly movie in DBZ, the Legendary Super Saiyan was popular among fans due to the fact that Broly was such a unique and popular character. This transformation, as Vegeta noted, could have been the true Super Saiyan form of legend due to how rare it is compared to the standard Super Saiyan state, which is achievable by any Saiyan that works hard enough to reach it.
So, in a sense, the Legendary Super Saiyan was meant to be the “true” Super Saiyan. Because Saiyans were destructive in nature, the fact that the Legendary Super Saiyan was a berserk Super Saiyan form made Vegeta conclude that this was the true nature of a Saiyan and that this transformation only allowed Broly to tap into his natural destructive instinct as a Saiyan upon turning into this form.
The Legendary Super Saiyan also resembles Super Saiyan Third Grade in the sense that they both have muscular looks. But what distinguishes the Legendary Super Saiyan is the greenish aura that the Saiyan irradiates. There’s also the fact that the Legendary Super Saiyan doesn’t have the drawbacks of Super Saiyan Third Grade in the sense that it doesn’t affect the user’s speed and stamina consumption.
As such, the Legendary Super Saiyan is often seen as a different Super Saiyan branch compared to the standard Super Saiyan form. But the events of Dragon Ball Super seem to make it look like the Legendary Super Saiyan is still part of the standard Super Saiyan transformation ladder because Kale transformed into Super Saiyan 2 after learning how to control her berserk state.
But the fact is that the Legendary Super Saiyan transformation is much more powerful than the Super Saiyan form. And the fact that it was so powerful in the events of the original DBZ – Broly movies and in Dragon Ball Super suggests that it could even be at the level of Super Saiyan Blue.
Is Kale A Legendary Super Saiyan?
As mentioned, Universe 6’s Kale achieved a form similar to the Legendary Super Saiyan transformation we saw in Dragon Ball Z – Broly. Take note that Broly was yet to become canon when Kale was introduced. However, when Kale achieved her first transformation after getting enraged when she saw Caulifla enjoying her fight with Cabba, she turns into a berserk Super Saiyan.
Meanwhile, during the events of the Tournament of Power, Kale tapped into this form once more when she also wanted to get stronger when Caulifla was impressed by Goku’s transformations. In that regard, she entered this form and overwhelmed most of the fighters in the tournament. She even took a Kamehameha from Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue form. So, does that mean that Kale is a Legendary Super Saiyan?
Take note that the term “Legendary Super Saiyan” was never used as a canon term in Dragon Ball. It was never used to describe Kale as well. Instead, she was merely described as a berserk Super Saiyan who may have immense power but lacked control and precision regarding how she fought.
In that regard, it can be suggested that this was an incredibly rare Super Saiyan transformation that can only be achieved by a few characters. But we can’t say for sure that this is a Legendary Super Saiyan form because that form is yet to be used in canon outside of the Broly movies in DBZ.
Of course, we all know that Broly was finally introduced as a canon character in the events of Dagon Ball Super: Broly, where he accessed a berserk form that was incredibly similar to the form that Kale achieved. However, Broly was a lot more powerful because his power allowed him to dominate and overwhelm Goku and Vegeta in their respective Super Saiyan Blue forms.
So, while we can’t say that both Kale and Broly are Legendary Super Saiyans, we can say that they are both counterparts of one another. Remember that Universe 6 is the sister universe of Universe 7, and that means some characters in Universe 7 have counterparts in Universe 6. Cabba, Caulifla, and Frost are counterparts of Vegeta, Goku, and Frieza, respectively.
When we met Kale, we didn’t know who her counterpart was because Broly was yet to become canon. But when Broly was introduced, it became clear that they were counterparts of each other. So, if Broly can be classified as a Legendary Super Saiyan, it goes without saying that Kale could also be a Legendary Super Saiyan.
