If someone told you 20 years ago that in 2023 we’d be waiting for the tenth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, you’d probably tell them they’re the most optimistic (or pessimistic, whichever you prefer) person in the world. And still, it’s 2023, and the franchise is set to release its penultimate movie — Fast X — this May. During its long history, the Fast & Furious franchise visited a dozen locations, destroyed thousands of cars in all kinds of crazy ways, and introduced a whole roster of characters. One of the characters, known only as Mr. Nobody, who was played by the veteran actor Kurt Russell, joined the franchise in the seventh installment. In this article, we’ll tell you what happened to him and whether he will be in Fast X.

Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody first appeared in the Fast & Furious franchise in 2015’s Furious 7. Russell reprised the role in The Fate of the Furious two years later. Russell appeared as Mr. Nobody in a minor role in F9, after which his fate remains unknown. Therefore, we can’t be sure if he’s dead or not. From the information we have so far, Russell wasn’t confirmed to return in Fast X, but if Mr. Nobody is still alive, there’s a chance he could appear in the movie as a surprise. If Mr. Nobody is indeed dead, then we presume that Fast X will confirm it in some way.

Plenty of known actors have come across the Fast & Furious franchise in the past, and Kurt Russell is one of the biggest veteran actors that this franchise had the honor of having. When he debuted in the franchise in 2015’s Furious 7, some fans suspected that he’d turn out to be the secret villain, but the franchise didn’t go that way. In the following paragraphs, we’ll tell you everything that happened to Mr. Nobody in the franchise and what exactly happened to him that left his fate unknown in F9.

The story of Mr. Nobody in the Fast & Furious franchise

Mr. Nobody is a government agent and covert operative who joined the franchise in Furious 7, which followed the story of Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto in his war against Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. Mr. Nobody has met with Dom and offered him to save the hacker known as Ramsey, played by Nathalie Emmanuel, and retrieve her powerful hacking device known as God’s Eye in order to find Shaw before he finds him. Dom accepted the offer, but once they found Shaw, he managed to escape after a shootout that left Mr. Nobody wounded and the God’s Eye stolen by Mose Jakande, a war criminal and then Shaw’s ally.

Mr. Nobody recovered from his wound and returned to The Fate of the Furious. He helped Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs to escape from prison after he was arrested for the family’s off-the-books action in Germany. Mr. Nobody also recruited Deckard Shaw, who was defeated and imprisoned at the end of the previous movie, to find Dom, who turned his back on the family for unknown reasons and catch Charlize Theron’s Cipher, a notorious cyberterrorist. The eighth installment also introduced Mr. Nobody’s young co-worker, Little Nobody, played by Scott Eastwood, who didn’t return in F9 but was confirmed to return in Fast X.

At the end of the eighth installment, Dom safely returns to his family with his son, who was why he was compelled to work for Cipher, and Cipher escaped. Mr. Nobody started a hunt for her and eventually caught her. However, the F9 showed us that Jakob Toretto, Dom’s brother and the movie’s main villain, attacked the plane in which Cipher was transferred. The plane crashed, and Jakob took Cipher away, along with one-half of the program known as Project Aries, but it’s unknown if Mr. Nobody survived the crash.

F9 also revealed that Mr. Nobody knew Gal Gadot’s Gisele Yashar, a member of the family who died in the sixth installment, presumably (because this is Fast & Furious, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if she’d eventually return). The movie also revealed how Mr. Nobody was responsible for faking Han’s death in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and how he recruited Han to retrieve Project Aries for him.

What are the chances that Mr. Nobody will appear in Fast X?

At this moment, it’s unknown if Mr. Nobody is dead or alive. But, let’s be honest, this is Fast & Furious, so even if he’s dead, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t eventually return in this next movie of the final, eleventh installment, which is actually considered the second part of the tenth installment (because all great franchises these days must be concluded in two parts). Although Kurt Russell’s return in Fast X wasn’t confirmed, it was confirmed that Scott Eastwood would return as Little Nobody. More interesting, it was recently confirmed that Brie Larson, a newcomer to the franchise, will play Mr. Nobody’s daughter Tess in Fast X.

Fast X: Every Actor Confirmed for the Tenth ‘Fast & Furious’ Installment

Brie Larson revealed it was always her wish to join this franchise, and after she was officially cast, many fans spread the theory that she’ll play the sister of Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner. However, it turns out that won’t be the case. Larson’s character Tess is described only as “a rogue representative from the Agency,” who also has some sort of history with Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto. Also, another of the newcomers to the franchise is Alan Ritchson, who will play Aimes, who is described as “the new head of the Agency who doesn’t hold the same fondness for Dom’s crew as his predecessor, Mr. Nobody.” Even if Kurt Russel doesn’t appear in Fast X, we can see there will be some strong connections to his character, so we can expect that he’ll be mentioned at least.

Fast X is the tenth main movie in the Fast & Furious franchise, and the eleventh one if we include that one spin-off which was released in 2019. This tenth installment is described as the first of a two-part conclusion of the franchise, meaning that we can expect one more movie, which will be the ultimate finale.

Fast X features an ensemble cast including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jason Momoa, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, John Cena, Jason Statham, Sung Kang, Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchior, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, and Rita Moreno.

Directed by Louis Leterrier, Fast X is set to be released on May 19, 2023.
