Kevin Feige Hints That Iron Man & Captain America Might Return to the MCU—But It All Hinges on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
It’s well known that MCU’s Phase 4 received the lowest ratings in franchise history. After the emotional and narrative peak of ‘Endgame,’ it seemed that everything following it fell short by comparison.
While some of the writing has been…unusual at times, it was clear that ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ would be tough acts to follow.
Following the events of ‘Endgame,’ two crucial and beloved characters appear to have left the franchise for good: RDJ’s Iron Man, who sacrifices himself by using the Infinity Gauntlet to defeat Thanos, and Evans’ Captain America, who chooses to live out his years with Peggy in an alternate timeline.
Feige has repeatedly stated that bringing Tony Stark back is not an option, as it would undermine the emotional impact of his sacrifice and diminish the stakes of the story—issues that seem to be recurring in the Multiverse Saga.
However, Feige now seems to be re-evaluating the possibility of their return or at least considering the idea. In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, he suggested that it could be done, but it would need to be executed well, using Wolverine as an example.
That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine. So, what’s to come? We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [Deadpool & Wolverine] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken.
It was recently revealed that Feige initially resisted bringing Jackman back as Wolverine, citing the character’s perfect farewell in ‘Logan.’ However, it seems Feige has reconsidered, given the impressive story in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
While the return of Iron Man and Captain America through variants was always a possibility, it might further frustrate fans who are already weary of seeing them again.
