Lernen is one of the most respected Mages in history

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has, indeed, introduced us to a series of intriguing and great characters, and while the character we are going to talk about here has only been seen briefly in the anime series, his role will increase later, as we get more information about him. He is Ehre’s grandfather and a good friend of Denken, which is why we have decided to prepare you for his story. He is Lernen and we are now going to tell you all you need to know about him.

Lernen is a secondary character from Frieren. He was born into a noble family and became a Mage at a very young age. He also became an Imperial Mage at the time, which is when he met Denken, and the two of them became good friends. Lernen would later be expelled from the Empire and while Denken tried to protect him until the very last moment, he couldn’t do much; on the other hand, Lernen has been grateful for his friendship ever since.

Later, when the Continental Magic Association was founded, Lernen immediately went there and he became the first ever First-Class Mage to be certified by the Association. Not only that, he also became Serie’s apprentice, and we know that Serie is the most powerful Mage in the whole series. While he has always been shy and reserved, as well as critical of himself, he was also quite rebellious during his youth and even had some quarrels with Serie during that time.

Now, he is an old and respected Mage; he taught his granddaughter, Ehre, how to become a powerful Mage and he is also in charge of overseeing the third part of the First-Class Mage Exam, which brings us to his powers and abilities, which we are going to talk in the upcoming section.

Although he seems timid and reserved, he has enormous power

As we have said, Lernen might not seem as much, really. He is old, he looks a bit confused, and it is a fact that he has reserved for the majority of his life. But, in his case, appearances are definitely deceiving, as Lernen is undoubtedly one of the most powerful Mages in the series, as our list confirms as well. The fact that he was Serie’s apprentice and the first officially certified First-Class Mage speaks for itself.

His specialty is Golem-creating magic. Although he is skilled in all fields and aspects of magic, what he likes most is creating Golems. These Golems are used by him for various purposes – offense, defense, healing, assistance, and even helping the examinees of his part of the First-Class Mage Exam. The Golems are quite powerful and he even has what he calls “Bottled Golems”, which are smaller versions of his Golems that he keeps in bottles and carries around with him. He, thus, has them at his disposal whenever he wants and when he releases them, they grow in size and become very useful in battle.

On top of that, Lernen has excellent mana-detection skills and has also demonstrated the ability to use an unnamed brand of offensive magic, showing his versatility and the true level of his skills and abilities. And this is all we have to tell you about Lernen, without spoiling too much of his story.
