Frieren: What Is the Empire & How Large Was It? All You Need To Know about the Manga’s Strongest Nation!
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. So far, we have mostly discussed characters that appear in the series, some locations, and concepts, but his article is going to be dedicated to a piece of history as we are going to go back in time and discuss the Empire. The Empire doesn’t exist in the present timeline, but it was a major part of the lore’s history about a millennium before the present timeline. In this article, we are going to tell you all you need to know about the Empire in Frieren.
The Empire encompassed almost the whole continent
While we have received a lot of fragments about the history of the lore of Frieren, the whole aspect is still very mysterious, and there is still a lot we do now know about the history of the world of Frieren. The basic chronology is divided into five major eras:
- Mythical Era
- Unified Dynasty Era
- Era of The Great Mage Flamme
- Era of Humans
- Era of Peace
Now, we have talked a bit about the Mythical Era as well as the Unified Dynasty Era, but we haven’t really talked much about the geopolitical structure of the latter period, which also has consequences for future eras of the timeline. It is unknown whether the Unified Dynasty established the Empire or not, but it is highly possible that it did. By the time of the Era of The Great Mage Flamme, the Empire had already been established as the most powerful and largest nation on the continent. As you can see on the map above, it did not encompass only the far north, one island, and some parts in the south.
Up until Flamme’s era, the Empire thought that Magic was only there to be used by the Demons and forbade humans to learn it; the only way that humans could learn Magic was by training with Elves. That is how Flamme became a Mage, as she learned from Serie. Flamme’s goal was to convince the Emperor to allow humans to learn Magic, and that is what actually happened.
When Flamme managed to convince the Emperor to open up to Magic, the humans became a very powerful force, and the Empire was undoubtedly the most powerful force on the continent. This also helped usher in the Era of Humans, just as Serie predicted. And that is, more or less, what we know about the history of the Empire. Let us now see what happened in the present.
The fate of the Empire is a bit unclear
The present state of the Empire is a bit unclear, and we don’t really know what happened there. The Era of The Great Mage Flamme was about a millennium before the current timeline, so it’s a long time, definitely, but seeing how this era was followed by the Era of Humans thanks to the Empire’s decisions, it doesn’t seem very logical that the Empire simply disappeared. But, either the authors were not consistent in describing the contemporary geography of the continent, or the Empire’s influence has faded over the years.
Currently, the continent is divided into several sections, none of which seem to be related to the Empire’s administrative division, but we could be wrong; this is not overly clear. Be that as it may, we do know that the empire still exists, as there are Imperial Mages, like Denken or Lernen, so we assume that the Empire is still present.
But, it doesn’t seem like the Empire is a major force in the same manner as it was 1,000 years before the present timeline, so some things have obviously changed, but sadly, we don’t have enough details to provide you with a full and proper story, but this article is a collection of all the known facts about the Empire in Frieren.
