Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. So far, we have mostly discussed characters that appear in the series, some locations, as well as concepts, but his article is going to be the first one in which we are going to discuss an organization that seems to be quite notorious as far as the world of Frieren is concerned. It is the Northern Magical Corps, a group of mercenaries led by Wirbel, and in this article, you will find out everything you need about it.
The Northern Magical Corps was founded to fight the remnants of the Demon King’s forces
Like every other major fictional world, the world of Frieren has a lot to offer in terms of its lore. There are various characters and concepts we can talk about, and this article – in particular – will focus on an organization of mercenaries tied to one of the major characters who appeared during the First-Class Mage Exam. The character in question is Wirbel, and the organization we are talking about is the Northern Magical Corps. you will find out everything you need to know about it.
The Northern Magical Corps is an organization of mercenaries operating in the northern lands. Wirbel leads it, although it remains unknown whether he alone founded it or whether he just took over the leadership of the group. Their base of operations is up north because the north is the final major stronghold of the remnants of the Demon King’s forces; if you remember, Frieren’s fight with Aura the Guillotine took place up north, so it makes sense that the Northern Magical Corps operate there.
They were established in order to fight the remnants of the Demon King’s forces up north and were led by Wirbel, who is a powerful mage. It is unknown whether the other members were also exclusively Mages or whether the Corps contained different classes of members. They also weren’t an overly large group, as the series suggested, but they were of a respectable size and looked like a small army. They might not have been the most powerful force, but they were respected and, as it seems, had a solid number of assignments, but not always from their primary scope of action, which brings us to the second part.
Sadly, it became an instrument of war that seemingly committed atrocities
As we have said, the Northern Magical Corps was quite popular up in the north, and they often had work to do, but it wasn’t always the work they had hoped for. Namely, the forces of the Demon King were not that numerous, and they engaged the humans head-on less than before. This meant that the Northern Magical Corps did not have any traditional enemies to fight, but they were still a mercenary force up for hire, which meant that there were always people who could use their services. And they did.
As Wirbel explained, due to a lack of work and an increasing number of non-demon-related skirmishes between the lands and domains, the Northern Magical Corps was hired to participate in regular wars as well. They got paid, and they got to fight, which is what they were organized for in the first place. In that aspect, the Northern Magical Corps became known as a general mercenary force for hire, which also led to them becoming quite notorious. They were known for their brutal efficiency, as well as for a high kill count.
This wouldn’t be such an issue per se – as there are casualties in every war – had they not fought women and children as well. Namely, as Wirbel revealed, their opponents would sometimes send women and children into war, which means that the Northern Magical Corps had to fight and kill them; this is how they became known for committing atrocities as well.
