Frieren: Who Is Lecker the Chef? Is He Really the Best Cook in the Series?

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss another character whose role is that of a secondary character – Lecker the Chef. You might find it strange that we’re talking about Lecker, but he is a character that we think has to be mentioned, as he is a very important part of Frieren’s memories of her adventures with Himmel’s party. What limited information we have about him, we are going to present to you here.

Lecker is supposedly the best chef in the whole lore of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

After the first part of the First-Class Mage Exam, the parties had a three-day rest in front of them before the start of Sense’s second task. Each of the mages decided to use it in a different way, and Frieren decided to take Fern and Stark out to eat, remembering that she had eaten in Äußerst 80 years prior and that the food was great. Although Fern noticed that 80 years is a long time and that the place might have closed down in the meantime, Frieren was unfazed by this comment, and they eventually reached Bell.

Bell is a very famous restaurant or inn, however, you’d like to call it, in Äußerst. It seems to have a tradition, and everyone who’s been there has confirmed that it has absolutely the best food – aside from Frieren, both Richter (a native of Äußerst) and Denken, who had been there with his late wife, confirmed this. But, the place is also expensive, although you will absolutely get your money’s worth there. It is unknown who runs the place now, but we know that the original chef of Bell was a man called Lecker. And this is his story.

Lecker is a chef, and he was the person in charge of Bell 80 years before the present timeline; we don’t know what happened to him in the meantime, but he is probably deceased or very, very old. Himmel’s original party met with him when they returned a very special knife – a family heirloom – to him, a knife that had been stolen by demons. As a token of gratitude, he offered them a meal in his restaurant, promising to provide them with the best service imaginable.

Not much is known about his story, but he was quite young and very self-confident. Not only was the meal he prepared abundant, but it was also delicious, as he prided himself in his skills, as well as his obviously meticulous and special approach to cooking. He prepared a lot of meat for Frieren, which confused everyone, but she said that the food in Bell was great and that they should savour as much of it as possible; Himmel replied that there would always be a next time, but she said that she thought that as well, but that she had been unable to experience many flavours for a second time, as the recipes changed over the years.

Lecker then told her that his recipes were special and that the same taste would remain even 100 or 200 years in the future. Frieren replied that every chef said that, but that each of them tried to leave a mark on a dish by changing the flavor a bit, which changed the overall taste. Himmel then said that even if that happened, they could simply find other, more delicious flavors, to which Lecker replied that he was wrong and that he wouldn’t be able to find any flavors that were more delicious than his.

Fast-forward 80 years later, Frieren is once again eating the same meat, but while she does remark that the taste is different, she happily concludes that Lecker was right and that the food is even more delicious than it was.
