George R. R. Martin Wants Us to Know “Everything That Went Wrong” With ‘House of the Dragon’ in a Cryptic Blog Post
‘House of the Dragon’ recently released its second season. Season 2 was successful and garnered generally good reviews and good viewership despite many fans noticing a drop in the quality of the story.
The season started off well enough, despite one of the most iconic scenes in the book, involving Blood & Cheese being absolutely butchered. That blunder was quickly redeemed by Rhaenys’ death, which caught the majority of the viewers off-guard.
Then, for some reason, nothing happened for the rest of the season. Plenty of fans pointed out that the season’s finale felt like a trailer for season 3. There’s been all that talk of war but objectively not that many important things happened to progress the war. There’s also been some talk about how the show is slowly sliding into wokeness. Largely due to the unscripted kiss between Mysaria and Rhaenyra, and the portrayal of Sharako Lohar. Some lines from the season’s finale were ridiculous as well as some statements made by the cast and crew as noted by fans.
Fans felt that sexism was pushed as the main “thing” but it was really done in a cheap and disingenuous way. It’s also been an issue that Rhaenyra is constantly being pushed as the “good guy” between the two rivals, in the book clearly she was not, in Martin’s universe, the vast majority of the characters are flawed.
But anyway, according to fan feedback, the season was not as good as it could have been, and George R. R. Martin hinted as much in his latest blog post. The writer detailed his vacation before dropping a cryptic hint on what’s to come:
I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… but I need to do that too, and I will. Not today, though. TODAY is Zozobra’s day, when we turn away from gloom.
This does not sound positive at all. Or at least, there’s no possible way to frame it in a positive light. While most of the issues I pointed out above are truly the crew’s problem, the biggest issue – the pacing, is something that I’m not sure I can hold against them. The show is after all, based on the book ‘Fire & Blood,’ and the book doesn’t deal with Dance of the Dragons.
The book details the whole history of the Targaryen Dynasty from Aegon’s landing to Westeros to their supposed fall, only 50 or so pages actually deal with the event ‘House of the Dragon’ is trying to stretch across several 8-hour-long episodes seasons.
