‘House of the Dragon’ Star Sonoya Mizuno Says Episode 6 Kiss Between Rhaenyra and Mysaria Was Unscripted

‘House of the Dragon’ episode 6 just released. We’ve seen the war efforts advance on both sides with Rhaenyra’s best strategy so far being to get the smallfolk of King’s Landing on her side.

Undoubtedly, the biggest proponent of that strategy is Lady Mysaria, who at the moment seems to be Rhaenyra’s biggest confidante and ally. Surrounded by men who can’t think further than their strong, Rhaenyra has found an ally who knows the interest of the numerous but forgotten peasants in King’s Landing, and eventually, it will be that smallfolk who embrace Rhaenyra as true queen, no matter how short her reign will be.

Mysarya established herself as an important player in “game of thrones” back in season 1, she rose from the dirt to become respected, a prototype of Varys from ‘Game of Thrones.’ With Rhaenyra however, she went a step far. Mysaria revealed what kind of abuse she suffered at the hands of her father, and the scars she will bear for the rest of her life.

In that moment of weakness, she and Rhaenyra bond and share a kiss. It was by far the most impactful moment of the season so far and in her recent interview with The Wrap the actress behind Mysaria, Sonoya Mizuno, revealed the moment was not in the script at all:

It wasn’t scripted as a kiss. I think it was scripted as … there’s just breath between them or something, and then whatever happens is interrupted. […] “Because we were separate in the room … [and] Mysaria has told this story, [D’Arcy] felt the instinct to hold her, to comfort her. From that, it felt so organic to go into the kiss.

Much of this season’s focus is on the sexism of Westeros and how both Rhaenyra and Alicent have it though surrounded by men who wish to sideline them. No matter how wise their council is it’s simply not enough. Alicent is fighting battles against her son who kicked her off the council, and Rhaenyra is mostly being seen as weak in recent times due to Daemon unofficially calling himself king and usurping Rhaenyra’s birthright.

It was exactly Daemon that brought the two women closer together since both have a history of dealing with him:

We would kind of discuss it as though it was two women who had the same ex-boyfriend, and they’d be like, “oh, yeah, when he does that thing …” and then it brings them closer together. It’s a nice journey that they’ve gone on from when Rhaenyra realizes she has history with Daemon to this moment where they can speak about Daemon and find the common ground there. It helps them work together.
