The Witcher 3: Here’s How To Get to Kaer Morhen for Wolf Gear

Share:

The world of Witcher 3 is filled with interesting landmarks and lore-important places. One such place is Kaer Morhen where the legendary School of the Wolf is located, and as it happens Kaer Morhen is filled with legendary treasures as well. One specific set of diagrams can only be acquired at Kaer Morhen, diagrams for Wolf School Gear, the only problem is, once you actually get access to that gear, you’re already way too high of a level for it actually be useful. We’re going to be dealing with this in today’s post, let’s see how to get to Kaer Morhen to retrieve the diagrams for wolf gear in Witcher 3.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • You travel to Kaer Morhen instantly after completing the quest “Ugly Baby”.
  • The only way to bypass this prerequisite is to use console commands but this can result in your game acting in an unpredictable way and you can ruin your quest progression by triggering a random quest that was supposed to be triggered later in the story.

How do you get to Kaer Morhen?

In general, Witcher 3 is a non-linear open-world game, however, some parts of the map cannot be accessed until you’ve reached a specific point in the storyline. Such is the case with Kaer Morhen. You can go to Kaer Morhen only after the Velen part of the main story is finished. No matter what choices you’ve made during the Velen storyline you will have to return to Crow’s Perch, Phillip Strenger will be gone and you will have to collect Uma, the ugly baby, and bring it to Kaer Morhen.

The only problem with this is you’re going to be around level 19 when you do that and this is a bit too late for Wolven Armor. Standard Wolf Gear has a recommended level of 14 and it’s obvious things got mixed up during development as there’s no way to reach Kaer Morhen before you’re done with the Velen Storyline

Unless that is you use cheats and this is what we’re going to be dealing with in the rest of this post.

How to get to Kaer Morhen by using console commands?

Before we get to the main part, you’re going to have to enable the debug console since it’s not available to the player by default. To enable debug console we’re going to have to edit Witcher’s .ini file. To enable cheats in Witcher 3 follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Witcher’s install directory, the easiest way to do that is to select “Browse Local Files” in Steam or to right-click the Witcher icon and select “Open File Location”
  2. Once you’ve reached Witcher’s install directory locate Witcher’s general ini file the path usually looks like this: D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3\bin\config\base
  3. Once you’ve reached the general ini file, open it and add the following line at the bottom DBGConsoleOn=true
  4. Save the changes made to the file and launch the game

Now that we’ve enabled the debug console we can finally reach Kaer Morhen straight away before we finish the Velen storyline. We’re going to use the “teleport” command to do this. To teleport to Kaer Morhen with cheats follow these steps:

  1. Launch the game and load the save file
  2. Press the tilde “~” on your keyboard, however, if you’re not using a standard English layout it might be some other key like F2, @, ö,§,ø if the tilde doesn’t work you’re going to have to locate it by pressing pretty much everything
  3. type “gotoKaerMohren” without quotation marks, and yes it’s spelled “Mohren” It’s not a typo
  4. Press enter, and if you’ve done everything right, you should teleport to Kaer Morhen instantly.

One thing I always mention when writing about cheats is, to be careful and always save your game before using them. You never know in what ways your game can break, it can be unpredictable and can prevent you from finishing the game.

Where to find the standard Wolf Gear diagrams?

There are several grades of diagrams scattered around Kaer Morhen but in this post, we’re going to focus on standard or entry-level diagrams.

You can find the diagrams without map markers but it’s generally easy if the quest is active. The quest becomes active and markers show up on the map once you buy a map. A blacksmith in Lindenvale and Hattori in Novigrad can sell you one.

Once you have the map (and the markers) your first location to visit will be the Old Signal Watchtower. Old Signal Watchtower sits right across from Kaer Morhen Keep, south of the Kaer Morhen signpost. If you manage to climb the Watchtower you will notice it overlooks the Kaer Morhen keep completely. At this location, you’re going to find all armor diagrams as well as Hieronymus’ notes which will reveal the locations of other diagrams. Be careful while exploring Old Signal Watchtower as Erynias made their home there.

The next location to visit is Bastion. Bastion is an abandoned fort located in the Kaer Morhen Valley, it’s west of Kaer Morhen Keep and it shouldn’t be too difficult to find since the structure itself is clearly visible and hard to miss. In Bastion, you will find a diagram for the standard School of the Wolf steel sword.

The last location to visit is Ruined Watchtower, it’s located north of Kaer Morhen Keep and sits next to a lake, it’s also hard to miss and you shouldn’t have trouble locating it. It’s a fairly solitary location with not much happening around. You will find the School of the Wolf silver sword diagram here.

And that’s pretty much it. As you can see to reach Kaer Morhen early, you’re going to have to break a few rules and use cheats. To avoid game-breaking experiences save your game before you travel to Kaer Morhen.  Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
