Fortnite is one of the most popular games in the last few years, and part of that popularity stems from including popular characters from other franchises. There’s really a plethora of customization options available to players if you know how to find them. Even though players are assigned a default gender at the start of the game as well as a default character, you can always change it while customizing it so, let’s see how it’s done.
Editor’s Note: This post was updated in October 2023 and represents the most up-to-date mechanics in the game.
Changing your gender in Fortnite
By now you’ve probably noticed that there aren’t really any gender differences in Fortnite in terms of your powers and abilities, and yes, even hitboxes are exactly the same, contrary to popular rumors. Still, from the purely aesthetic perspective, it’s reasonable to want to shuffle things once in a while, and you would want to play as either male or female. Unfortunately, Fortnite doesn’t have an official and straightforward way to change your default gender, as that’s largely reliant on your currently equipped skin.
Even changing your skin doesn’t warrant that you will be able to change your gender because most skins are gender specific. For example, there isn’t a male version of Catwoman or Lara Croft, just like there isn’t a female version of Clark Kent or The Batman Who Laughs.
So if you want to change your gender in Fortnite you will have to pick a skin that corresponds to that gender. You can do this by following these steps:
- From the main screen got to the Locker.
- Go to “Outfits” represented by a T-Shirt icon.
- Select “Outfit” that corresponds to the gender you want.
As I’ve explained before, there’s no way to change your gender into male once you have a Catwoman outfit equipped, and in that sense, Fortnite skins are severely limited. However, there are outfits that have the so-called Counterpart Outfits that look more or less the same or follow the same theme but are available in male or female variants.
A perfect example of a counterpart outfit would be the Raven (Male) and Ravage (Female) outfits that were released as a part of the Nevermore Set. However, you still need to purchase the variant for both genders to be able to switch back and forth between them.
Changing your character in Fortnite
Your character is also preset, as well as your gender, and you’re basically stuck with what you have until you purchase a skin. There are no specific “characters” in Fortnite as much as there are “character models.” Some notable character models are Ramizre, Banshee, Headhunter, and Wildcat, but some skins like, for example, Harley Quinn and Kane, have completely unique models.
So, to change your current character, you need to go through much the same process as changing your gender.
- Navigate yourself to Fortnite’s main screen.
- Go to locker.
- Select the “T-Shirt” tile.
- Change your skin to correspond with the character that you want to have.
- For example, if you want to play as Ramirez, you need to select skins that use her as a character model, and those are Ghoul Tropper, Red Knight, Rose Team Leader, Skull Ranger, etc.
And that’s pretty much it. As you can see, you can play as whoever you want as long as you’re willing to spend some money. To have access to a bigger choice between genders and character models, you need to purchase a lot of skins. Otherwise, the specific mechanic to do so doesn’t exist.
