What happens to Killua Zoldyck in Hunter × Hunter?

Killua is the third son of the most renowned assassin family in the world, the Zoldycks. Seen from birth as a great talent, Killua has already experimented with various assassination techniques, even though he is only young age. For his accomplishments in work, he is seen as one of the greatest assassins the family has ever produced.

From an early age, Killua was forced to train very hard by swimming in electrified pools and participating in the Celestial Tower tournament at just six years of age. However, bored and tired of killing, Killua unexpectedly rebels against his family. He injured his mother and older brother, leaving the Zoldick estate on Mount Kukuruu to take the exam to become a Hunter. During the exam, he meets Gon, who will become his best friend, although Killua initially sees them as rivals.

Thanks to Gon’s company, Killua will be able to overcome his killer instincts (caused by a life spent training to kill) and will be able to integrate perfectly into the group with Kurapika and Leorio. It will be precisely the last remnants of these homicidal instincts that will not allow Killua to pass the exam to become a hunter in the same year as Gon due to the killing of the candidate Bodoro. This unexpected gesture was the only way for Killua to satisfy the requests of his brother Illumi, that is, not to obtain a hunter’s license until the family or himself approved it.

Thanks to his brother Milluki, Killua discovers that some copies of the game will be put up for sale at the annual York Shin City auction. The two boys thus decide to go to York Shin to earn money necessary for the purchase.

Here the two meet Leorio again and are put on the trail of the Ghost Brigade. The three manage to find two members of the organization. Still, Gon and Killua, in an attempt to follow them, are captured and taken to the organization’s hideout to be questioned about Kurapika. While unable to obtain information, Nobunaga, one of the members, shows interest in the two and proposes to Gon to join the Brigade by replacing the now-deceased Uvogin, but the two manage to escape. Gon and Killua later help Kurapika capture the leader of the Brigade, Quoll.

Gon and Killua later manage to venture into Greed Island, a magical video game that “sucks” the players’ bodies into it, on behalf of the billionaire Battera. It is later revealed that the game takes place on an island in the real world and was created by very powerful nen users, including Gon’s father. Greed Island is based on a complex card game to collect one hundred of them. Within the game, Gon and Killua are joined by Biscuit Krueger, an expert user of the nen, who will continue the training with Gon and Killua.

While Gon and Biscuit wait for him on the island, Killua passes the exam at the following session. This time it is a simple formality. In fact, he is the only one to pass the first test of the exam by beating all the other examinees. The former also constitutes the only test of the session, as President Netero, knowing Killua’s abilities, instantly promotes him. Back on Greed Island, after having defeated together with Gon and Hisoka, Razor, a friend of Gin, manages together with Gon and Biscuit to eliminate the threat of the Boomers and thus finish the game.

Following Kaito’s death, he and Gon train at Biscuit to defeat Knuckle and Shoot, two students of Morau, and return to Neo Green Life with Palm, a student of Nobu. The opponents turn out to be stronger than expected, and, despite sustained hard training, Gon and Killua are defeated. Subsequently, Killua faces Leol’s division and manages to defeat many chimera ants spreading panic among the enemies, but in the end, he faints from his injuries and is rescued by the chimera ant Calamaro, whose life he had previously saved.
