Hunter X Hunter is often ranked as one of the best anime of all time. Also, every anime lover that has watched this series can testify to its action-packed, adventure-themed plot that has earned its place in the hearts of everyone.
With Hunter X Hunter having had its final run in 2014, we are all currently looking for that anime that can give us that excitement that Hunter X Hunter gave us.
Having that in mind, I have come up with 20 of the best anime like Hunter x Hunter, which promise to leave an impression like Hunter X Hunter did.
20. Akame Ga Kill!
We start off our list of anime like Hunter X Hunter with Akame ga Kill. Akame ga kill tells the story of the ‘political revolution.’ Here, our main character Tatsumi goes to the capital with two of his friends to make enough money to help their village. However, they were separated on the way to the capital.
But after encountering the Night Raid, Tatsumi arrives at the capital only to find out that both his friends have been killed.
This fateful incident moves Tatsumi to get revenge for his friends and later join the night raids. Nevertheless, the Night Raid hopes to end the corruption bewildering the capital, and causing poverty in the land.
Akame ga Kill certainly has much darker tones than Hunter X Hunter. However, the overall feel of adventure and the fight scenes resemble the Hunter X Hunter anime.
19. Mob Psycho 100
Mob Psycho 100 is a powerful psychic who is withdrawn from society due to his inability to control his psychic powers. He works under a con artist who is a self-proclaimed psychic in an attempt to control his powers.
Despite this, the powers of Mob grow uncontrollable with time, and he would later get to meet people similar to him. Now, this promises to create the ultimate entertainment.
18. The Seven Deadly Sins
If you are looking for an anime like Hunter X Hunter that would keep you at the edge of your seats during the fight scenes, then look no further!
Following the betrayal of the third princess of Liones, Princess Elizabeth by the Holy Knights, the princess searches for the characters called Seven Deadly Sins. The Seven Deadly Sins were previously framed by the infamous Holy Knights leading to their disbandment.
The Seven Deadly Sins are on a quest to liberate the kingdom of Liones and, in the process, clear their names. This action-packed anime is bound to get you excited, especially the well-thought-out fight scenes. The scenes in this anime turn out just like the ones in Hunter X Hunter.
17. Dr. Stone
Senku Ishigami and his friend Taiju, a young genius, are awakened in a world where all life forms are turned to stone. Now, together they find a way to revive a man called Tsukasa, with a vision of restoring a new science-themed civilization.
However, Tsukasa rose to rebel against them, leading to an exciting series of betrayals and conquest between Senku’s allies and Tsukasa.
16. One Punch Man
One-Punch Man tells the story of Saitama, who, in hopes of becoming stronger, trains to the point he becomes overpowered. At this point, he actively defeats his opponents with just one punch!
As a result of his overwhelming strength, Saitama becomes bored as he finds no thrill in fighting anymore.
Reluctantly becoming a teacher to the Humanoid Cyborg ‘Genos,’ both teacher and master join the Hero Association. However, this decision would enable Saitama to help people, get paid, and gain recognition for his work. But this does not go exactly as planned.
You would have to watch the anime to get the complete story. However, One Punch Man is turning out to be a classic, and the comedy is top-notch.
One-Punch Man is a definite recommendation; go watch to find out if anyone withstood more than one punch of Saitama’s blow.
15. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure follows a self-standing thrilling story about a wealthy family. The first part introduces two brothers – Jonathan Joester and Dio Brando.
Despite being family, Brando sought to destroy his brother and gain world dominance. However, he had his brother who embarked on a journey to hone his martial arts skills to stop him.
14. Shokugeki No Souma
Our next entry on this list of anime like Hunter x Hunter follows a teenager, Yukihira Soma who aims to be the best at his culinary academy, just like his father. Yukihira later finds out that his father was one of the very best at the culinary academy where Yukihira Soma is enrolled.
Although this series is set in a culinary school, it is by no means a boring anime. Instead, it made the list because of the many similarities it shares with Hunter X Hunter.
Both the fathers of Gong and Soma are legends in their respective fields. However, Gong and Soma have the determination also to become the best at what they do. The determination and comedic output offered by Shokugeki No Soma is something we got to see in Hunter X Hunter.
No doubt this anime is a solid recommendation.
13. No Game, No Life
No Game, No Life follows the story of two unbeatable online gaming siblings, Sora and Shiro.
The duo was later challenged to a game of chess by a god from another reality called Tet. Finally, they are summoned to a new reality that settles disputes by battling it out via games after their win.
In these games, however, people are allowed to cheat so long they do not get caught. The bond between Sora and Shiro and the gaming theme is similar to the one we see in the Greed Island Arc in Hunter X Hunter.
12. Yu Yu Hakusho
You probably haven’t heard of Yu Yu Hakusho, have you? Well, I wouldn’t hold a grudge; it is an unfairly underrated anime, if I may say so myself.
You’ll know this anime has something to offer, written by the same author as the Hunter X Hunter series -Yoshihiro Togashi. The story follows a boy named Urameshi Yusuke, who is a complicated teenager occasionally getting into brawls.
Yusuke is eventually killed in an attempt to save the life of a young boy. After his death, it is revealed to Yusuke that there is a debate on whether to send him to heaven or hell, as his actions are a bit confusing.
Urameshi Yusuke later proceeds to become an underworld detective with the help of his friends, also he later reunites in the human world with them. Thus, the plot of Yu Yu Hakusho follows mainly an adventure pattern, with similarities like aura and a sense of friendship.
It doesn’t take a genius to see the similarity between this anime and Hunter X Hunter; I mean, they were written by the same writer after all.
11. My Hero Academia
With over 80% of the population having superpowers labeled as ‘Quirks,’ surprisingly few people do not have quirks.
The main protagonist of My Hero Academia is Izuku Midoriya happens to be one born without a Quirk. However, Izuku later gets a Quirk from one of his idols, who is a hero, after seeing the determination of Izuku Midoriya.
Attending U.A high school, Izuku begins his journey to becoming a hero who would cooperate with the government in bringing criminals who abuse their quirks to justice. The determination we see in Izuku carries a sense of familiarity as this trait is identical to that of Gon Freecs in Hunter X Hunter.
10. Black Clover
Black Clover tells the story of two orphans Asta and Yuno, and their struggle to become the Wizard King, a character that would only be second to the king in authority.
Asta was born without the ability to manipulate Mana, a feat that everyone should be able to achieve. However, Yuna was quite the opposite, born as a natural in controlling Mana.
Asta and Yuno develop a friendly rivalry in hopes of becoming strong enough to be the Wizard King someday; the ability of the two friends Asta and Yuno to control Mana is similar to what we see in Killua and Gon in Hunter X Hunter.
As such, if you hope to see this theme again, then Black Clover is the anime you ought to watch.
9. Bleach
Bleach is an anime series that has recently started to gain popularity again amongst anime lovers. Also, the final arc in the manga has been recently announced to have a manga remake, which shows the recent popularity and demand for Bleach.
Bleach tells the story of Ichigo Kurosaki, who reluctantly becomes a soul reaper at the pace of a shinigami named Rukia. However, Rukia becomes unable to carry out her duties following her battle with a hollow.
The story later progresses to the point where Ichigo teams up with two of his friends, exiled soul reapers, to save Rukia.
Rukia was framed by a high-ranked soul reaper called Sosuke Aizen and hence, their mission to save her. Thus, the adventure, plots, and theme of Bleach share a somewhat similar resemblance to those in Hunter X Hunter.
The adventure and sometimes bonds of friendship are also why Bleach is a fantastic anime substitution for Hunter X Hunter and one I highly recommend you watch.
8. Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball is another legendary anime, no doubt. But, looking for the same feel of overpowered villains and antagonists mixed with adventure and epic fight scenes like in Hunter X Hunter, then Dragon ball is just right for you.
Dragon Ball tells the story of Goku and Bulma and their adventure to collect the seven Dragon Balls. However, their experience leads them to fight some of the strongest warriors on the planet.
Thus, Goku stands a chance because of his determination and the help he received from some pretty strong people in the present and afterlife. Consequently, Dragon Ball is one anime that would make it hard to catch your breath due to the well-written plot, fight scenes, and adventure.
The way characters gain their powers over time would certainly remind you of Gon and Killua’s growth up until the point of the Chimera Ant Arc. However, I think anyone trying to get the feel of Hunter X Hunter has to watch Dragon Ball.
There is a reason why I placed it so high on this list!
7. Dororo
Dororo follows the story of a Samurai named Hyakkimaru, born without a lot of his human features.
This deformity is a result of a pact made between his father and some sealed demons. However, Hyakkimaru managed to survive due to the intervention from the goddess of mercy, whom his mother prayed to for her son’s safety.
Forced to be set adrift in a river despite pleas from his mother, Hyakkimaru was found and trained by a medicine man. The medicine looked after the young boy and gave him prosthetics, and treated him with healing magic.
With the help of a young orphan named ‘Dororo,’ Hyakkimaru was able to find out the truth about his past. Nevertheless, finding out the truth made him develop an even stronger resolve to get his entire body back.
Hyakkimaru and Gon both share a similar fate of being left behind. Although both fathers have entirely different reasons for doing so, the thread of leaving their sons behind still lingers.
Both anime still portray the idea of a bond, action-packed scenes, and, more importantly to some anime fans, adventure.
I may be a bit biased when it comes to Dororo but take it from one of the biggest fans of Hunter X Hunter; you don’t want to make the mistake of not watching this anime.
Also, though darker, there are similarities in this anime with Hunter X Hunter that I guarantee you would appreciate and why I placed it so high on this list.
6. Naruto
No doubt Naruto is on the list!
If you are a true weeb, you’ve most certainly heard of arguably one of the best anime series of all time – Naruto!
Naruto is a two-part anime series divided into ‘Naruto’ and ‘Naruto Shippuden.’ It follows the story of a Ninja named Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming the Hokage of his village.
Before his birth, the Hokage had to seal the Nine-tailed fox in Naruto to save the village from the carnage caused by the beast. As such, it was tough for Naruto to make friends in his village.
This was because everyone only saw the monster in him and not the kind, determined boy he was.
Naruto Uzumaki had to struggle to finally be accepted by the people in his village of the hidden leaf. However, with the help of his friends, Sensei, and master, he grew to become an excellent Shinobi.
There are many similarities between Hunter X Hunter and Naruto; the adventure, the right amount of comedy, overpowered characters, and similar fighting styles. Also, similarities in plots exist, like the goal to avenge their clan by Sasuke in Naruto and Kurapika in Hunter X Hunter.
The building of friendships and the determination to become stronger by the main character in both series are pretty similar. If you plan to get something closest to Hunter X Hunter, Naruto is the place to look.
5. Jujutsu Kaisen
To save his friend Itadori Yuji consumes the finger of a demon king to exorcise a demon.
Itadori Yuji becomes the host of the demon king Ryomen Sukuna who seemingly cannot be controlled. However, this feat was proved wrong as Itadori managed to retain control of his body even after ingesting a component of the demon king.
Seeing this, Gojo Sensei – a seemingly undefeated character even feared by demons, decides to take Itadori to Tokyo Prefectural jujutsu High. A place where Itadori can hone his skills and exorcise the demon king after collecting all of Sukuna’s fingers.
The ability to use cursed energy and cursed techniques by the characters is similar to the manipulation of Aura in Hunter X Hunter. This ability is one of the first similarities we get to notice between these two anime.
Jujutsu Kaisen boasts a thrilling mix of adventure, demons that sometimes remind you of the monsters in Hunter X Hunter, and powerful characters with epic fight scenes and comedy.
This anime is one of the best anime you can enjoy and will remind you of Hunter X Hunter.
4. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
The plot follows the quest of Aladdin, a young boy, and his friend Alibaba. They both proceed to conquer dungeons to harness the powers and riches associated with them.
This anime’s unique plot and character development stand out as one of the best. The lead character also bears a striking resemblance in character to Gon in Hunter X Hunter.
This resemblance, plus his pairing with his friend Alibaba, would no doubt remind you a lot of Gon and Killua, I guarantee it. The feeling of adventure, youth, friendship, and the enemy threat is captured in Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic and so too in Hunter X Hunter.
This anime is a definite recommendation if you want to relive the Hunter X Hunter experience through another lens.
3. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba
Demon Slayer follows the story of a boy named Tanjiro Kamado.
Tanjiro, after becoming the breadwinner of his family due to the death of his father, loses his family. This loss resulted from an attack by demons that slaughtered them, with his sister Nezuko being the only survivor. Unfortunately, Nezuko turns into a demon herself after seemingly surviving the encounter.
Nezuko seemed to surprisingly show human emotions, gaining her strength by resting instead of consuming human flesh like the other demons Tanjiro encounters a demon slayer who proceeds to send him to meet his master for training to become a demon slayer.
Tanjiro agrees to avenge the death of his family and get revenge on the demon that killed his family. Demon Slayer has the adventure-type pattern that Hunter X Hunter also has and has a presence of demons similar to monsters like the Chimera ants in Hunter X Hunter.
Tanjiro would also later meet and form bonds of friendship with Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira. This is similar to the bonds of friendship between Gon and his friends – Killua, Kurapika, and Leiorio.
Comedy, adventure, and active fight scenes, Demon slayer, carries the whole package like Hunter X Hunter did.
2. One Piece
If you’ve heard of Naruto, chances are you’ve heard of One Piece. One Piece is an ongoing anime series that focuses on the Character Monkey D. Luffy.
Luffy gains the ability of his body to become rubber-like after unwittingly consuming a Devil Fruit and his quest to find the One Piece treasure. On his quest through the East Blue Sea, he encounters and befriends many people who join him on his quest to seek the Titular treasure.
With over 900+ episodes and counting, you wouldn’t fail to be bored going through every adventure with Luffy and his crew. However, if you are in love with the fight scenes in Hunter X Hunter, One Piece is also bound to give you that thrill.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fullmetal Alchemist tells the story of two brothers – Edward and Alphonse Elric. The Elric brothers are on a quest to find the philosopher’s stone after they practice a forbidden alchemy technique in hopes of bringing their mother to life.
Elric only lost part of his body, while Alphonse lost his entire body in the process. In an attempt to save Alphonse, Elric binds his soul to armor.
Hence, their quest to find the philosopher’s stone to return the body of his brother. Fullmetal Alchemist is undoubtedly an underrated anime and one I would personally recommend for anyone who is a fan of Hunter X Hunter.
Fullmetal Alchemist is packed with the right amount of adventure. There is never a dull moment in the series with comedy laced in the mix, just like in Hunter X Hunter.
Also, like in Hunter X Hunter, both protagonists are on a quest to find something important to them with the aid of friends around to help. I believe FullMetal Alchemist has the most striking similarity to Hunter X Hunter when things like plot, comedy, adventure, and fight scenes are considered.
