Share:

Back in season 1 of ‘Invincible,’ we met a character who is important to Cecil Stedman’s work as the head of the Global Defense Agency. We are talking about Donald Ferguson, who worked as Cecil’s assistant and trusty sidekick. However, one of the things that we saw in season 2 was the fact that he was still alive and working for Cecil even though he was supposed to be dead after season 1. So, how did Donald Ferguson survive?

  • Article Breakdown:
  • In season 1, Donald died in an explosion after sacrificing himself to try to take down Omni-Man.
  • Donald appears to be fine in season 2, as seen from the fact that he was still working for Cecil.
  • It is possible that Donald had become a cyborg, as his comic book counterpart was actually a cyborg.

Omni-Man killed Donald in season 1

The events of ‘Invincible’ season 1 allowed us to meet the many different important players in the storyline of this amazing superhero narrative. We know that Cecil Stedman, the leader of the Global Defense Agency, is arguably the most important person on Earth because he is the one in charge of protecting the planet from supervillains and possible invaders. But one of the most important characters in Cecil’s job was Donald Ferguson.

Donald worked as Cecil’s right-hand man and assistant while they were both working for the Global Defense Agency. He was Cecil’s trusty sidekick in the many tasks they had to perform as part of their duties with the GDA. Donald was great at his job as he never questioned Cecil’s orders and was always willing to do whatever was necessary to protect the people of Earth.

In relation to that, Cecil and the GDA eventually found out about Omni-Man and the fact that he was the one who killed the Guardians of the Globe at the end of season 1. Even before that, Cecil already had his eyes on Omni-Man because he knew that he was the only one strong enough to take on all of the members of the Guardians of the Globe. And Donald was one of the people he trusted to watch the most powerful hero on Earth.

After the GDA found out about Omni-Man’s true nature and intentions, they tried their best to slow him down so that he wouldn’t be able to reach his son, Mark, whom he was trying to convince to join forces with him. Cecil knew that Mark was the planet’s only hope against Omni-Man, which meant that he needed to keep Invincible away from his father. Donald was one of the first people who tried to stop Omni-Man.

Omni-Man survived the assault of well-trained soldiers who tried to slow him down in his own home. He eventually found out that the GDA had a safehouse just across the street, and he went over there to find Donald. Omni-Man grabbed hold of Donald’s spine and was about to rip it out of his body before Donald activated an explosion. The explosion killed Donald but left Omni-Man unscathed.

As such, it was clear that Omni-Man was responsible for Donald Ferguson’s death in season 1. Cecil lost his right-hand man and most trusted assistant in the hopes of trying to slow Omni-Man down.

In the comics, Donald is a cyborg

While it may be true that Donald supposedly died back in season 1, fans were surprised to see him back in action with the GDA in season 2. He appeared when Cecil returned to the Pentagon after a meeting with Mark as Donald told him about the situation regarding the Guardians of the Globe’s fight with a villain called the Giant.

It was never explained in the episode how or why Donald was still there, but it was clear that he was alive and well. The episode even mentioned that only a month had passed since the showdown between Invincible and Omni-Man at the end of season 1. So, even if Donald did indeed survive his injuries from Omni-Man’s attack and the explosion that followed, one month shouldn’t have been enough for him to recover.

In the comics, Donald is actually 98% cybernetic. That means that he was turned into a cyborg at one point in time by replacing almost all of his body parts with mechanical objects. In fact, Donald has a few tricks up his sleeves in the comics, as he can transform his arms into weapons and even fly.

There’s a good chance that Donald’s brain may have survived the explosion back in season 1 and that Cecil and the people over at the GDA attached his brain to a cybernetic body, thus preserving his memories and personality. After all, there were only a few people Cecil was willing to trust, and Donald was one of them. As such, he had all the reasons and technology to try to bring Donald back to life in the form of a cyborg, especially because he was short on reliable people after the events that happened in season 1.

At this point, we can’t say for sure how or why Donald is still alive, but we believe that this will be revealed in season 2. It is even possible that he did indeed become a cyborg, especially considering that the TV series has been mostly consistent with the comics so far.
