James Gunn Unveils the First Projects Set in His DC Universe
A lot of things have happened within DC over the past few years. The first attempt at building a cinematic universe to conquer Disney’s MCU failed due to a series of unfortunate events. James Gunn has appeared, directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel and The Suicide Squad for DC, and has been hired alongside Peter Safran to build a new DC Universe from the ground up. Well, almost.
Meanwhile, Matt Reeves directed The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson. Todd Philips announced he’s working on a Joker sequel starring Joaquin Phoenix. The Flash movie is yet to be released this year, as well as Shazam and Aquaman sequels from the now officially deceased DC Extended Universe. Dwayne Johnson also released his Black Adam, which brought back Henry Cavill’s Superman, but he was still disappointed at the box office. Shortly after Black Adam’s release, Cavill said he was definitely done with the role of Superman.
Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Zachary Levi are some of the actors from the previous DCEU who are reportedly welcome to return to the DCU projects. Despite the fact that Wonder Woman 3 with Gadot has been canceled, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of her.
With all that, let’s see what new DC projects were announced today. Happy reading.
Movies
Superman: Legacy
The first solo Superman movie since Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Unfortunately for some fans, this film will not star Henry Cavill. James Gunn is developing the script while a director has yet to be chosen, though Safran has said he hopes Gunn could direct it. The film will follow a younger Clark Kent as he tries to balance his life of crime-fighting and journalism at the Daily Planet. It is not known who will star in the title role. The film is slated to release on July 11, 2025.
The Authority
This will be the second movie in Gunn’s DCU. Not much can be said at this point, but it’s known that the movie will follow a team of superheroes that was first introduced in 1999 by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. No release date has been revealed.
The Brave and the Bold
This will be a new Batman movie, but with a whole new actor, so don’t expect Ben Affleck or Robert Pattinson here. This movie will introduce DCU’s main Batman and follow his relationship with Damien Wayne, his son, and Robin.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
The new Supergirl movie has been in development hell for a while now. The first film starring Helen Slater received negative reviews, and the character had a TV series on The CW starring Melissa Benoist. Although Benoist was a very good choice for the role, the show was criticized for its writing and poor CGI. Supergirl will appear in the upcoming film The Flash, with Sasha Calle playing the role. It has not been specifically confirmed that she will play a character in this solo film. Gunn said that this version of Supergirl would be “a lot more hardcore.”
Swamp Thing
This famous DC character Swamp Thing had his own series in 2019. After it was canceled after only one season, Gunn wants to bring the character to the big screen. The project is described as more of a horror film than others.
The Batman – Part II (Elseworlds)
If you liked Matt Reeves’ take on the Caped Crusader, don’t worry! A sequel starring Robert Pattinson is in active development and will be released on October 3, 2025. This film is not part of the larger DCU, as it has been announced that DC will have Elseworlds projects like this and Joker 2.
TV Shows
Paradise Lost
This TV series is a spin-off of the Wonder Woman movie. The action will take place on the island of Themyscira before Wonder Woman was born. This spin-off has been in the works for a long time. We didn’t expect it to survive all these changes in the DC canon, but it looks like it did.
Green Lanterns
The Green Lantern TV series is also one of the projects that have been developing for a long time. Good to know the project is still alive. The series will also follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The two will investigate mysteries that connect to a larger movie story.
Waller
Viola Davies, who played Amanda Waller in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2021’s The Suicide Squad, the first season of Peacemaker, and 2022’s Black Adam, will return in her own spin-off series, which will be set between the events of Peacemaker’s first and second season, which is currently in development.
Booster Gold
A TV series that will introduce the titular character to the DCU. The series will be a comedy, and Gunn said the character is like “imposter syndrome as a superhero.”
Creature Commandos
An animated series that will follows a team of military superheroes who fought Nazis in World War II.
