Kokichi Muta, or Mechamaru, is one of the most peculiar characters in Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen series. Although he was introduced as a robot, it turned out that there was an actual human there, who was one of the most disfigured and crippled characters in the series. Now, while powerful and possessing many new techniques, one cannot but wonder why Mechamaru was in such a state, i.e., what caused his state, as it is definitely out of the ordinary, even for Jujutsu Kaisen standards. Could it be that he has Heavenly Restriction? We’ll soon find out.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Heavenly Restriction is a type of Binding Vow imposed from birth and is not the result of choice. They severely restrict one’s physical abilities, but the benefits they grant are, however, substantial in proportion.
  • In the series, only three characters are known to have had a Heavenly Restriction: Toji Fushiguro, whose cursed energy was zero, Maki Zenin, who has a “proper” restriction, and Kokichi Muta, also known as Mechamaru.
  • Mechamaru’s case was an extreme case of Heavenly Restriction, as his body was crippled and he was unable to walk in natural light, in exchange for the large amount of cursed energy he received.

Heavenly Restriction is an uncommon phenomenon, but when it appears – it always foreshadows something special

Before we actually answer, we need to explain what a Heavenly Restriction is in the first place since it is quite complex.

A Heavenly Restriction is a binding vow imposed from birth, not something that is decided upon. A Heavenly Restriction significantly limits the physical abilities of persons with them, but the advantages outweigh the costs. It is currently impossible to pinpoint exactly what or how someone gains this kind of limitation; one factor that could play a role is pure luck. Despite this, each example is so dissimilar from the others that it is fascinating to examine them all. This is essentially all that is known about how this binding vow is created; aside from that, not much is known about it.

Those with a Heavenly Restriction have little to no cursed energy at all, and their abilities are severely limited. They gain other benefits, but as far as cursed energy is considered – they are severely limited or, in Toji’s case, have no cursed energy at all.

As far as it is known, a Heavenly Restriction cannot be broken or altered – what you get is what you have, and that is more or less it. The series showed that Mahito’s ability was able to fix Mechamaru’s physical conditions, but it was never explained how that affected his Heavenly Restriction. We can assume that it did not change the basic conditions. Mahito changed his appearance, but the Heavenly Restriction still remained.

Mechamaru’s case of Heavenly Restriction was an extreme one by all standards

Now that we have explained Heavenly Restriction, we can explain Mechamaru’s case. As we have said, one of the most extreme instances of Heavenly Restriction was Kokichi Muta. He had no sensation in his lower body at birth due to the amputation of his right arm and legs at the knees. In addition, the young man’s skin is so thin that he burns when exposed to the sun or even moonlight. He described the intense tingling he feels all the time as “like someone was sticking needles into his flesh.”

However, upon accepting this, he was bestowed with an immense quantity of Cursed Energy, which he utilizes to manipulate an endless number of puppets of all sizes and forms. Controlling one puppet at a time is complex. Still, Mechamaru’s cursed energy was so high that he was able to control dozens of puppets at the same time, as we’ve seen during his fight against Mahito; he was also able to control a gigantic, kaiju-size robot with which he almost defeated Mahito.

But, even though his Heavenly Restriction granted him enormous powers, he vowed to give up everything in exchange for a regular, healthy body so he could meet his friends in person and be with Miwa, whom he was in love with. This is why he became a spy for Kenjaku and Mahito, making a vow with Mahito that he would heal his body with his technique if he provided them with enough intel. Of course, Mechamaru planned on killing the villains after this, but sadly – he failed, which is a topic you can read about in our other article.
