Jujutsu Kaisen: Is Mechamaru in Love With Miwa? Relationship Explained!
Romantic relationships aren’t really the focus of Jujutsu Kaisen, which isn’t unusual for a Shonen series. Such series often have one or two hints at romance, but these are either never confirmed or are confirmed in the epilogue of the series. Numerous hints have been provided about the main characters, and one of the most recent ones included the characters of Kasumi Miwa and Mechamaru, whose real name was Kokichi Muta. In this article, we are going to explain the nature of their relationship and tell you whether they were a couple or not.
Kasumi Miwa and Kokichi Muta, better known as Mechamaru, were never a couple, but the series heavily hinted at their love. Miwa was very kind to Mechamaru; she would often visit him, and she also revealed that she wanted to visit him in his hideout, where he had to be due to his special condition. On the other hand, Mechamaru often thought of Miwa, and even when he said that he wanted to see “everyone,” he always thought of Miwa first. It is obvious that the two of them had a crush on each other, but the romance never came to be.
The rest of this article will explore the relationship between Kasumi Miwa and Kokichi Muta (i.e., Mechamaru) while focusing, in particular, on the nature of their relationship and whether they are in love with each other or not, i.e., whether Kasumi Miwa actually ever became Mechamaru’s girlfriend in the series or not. If you’re not fully up-to-date with the events of Jujutsu Kaisen, this article might contain some important spoilers, but we have to state that no new information will be presented here, as we will focus on old and well-known facts about the two of them.
Miwa and Mechamaru liked each other, but their romance was – ultimately – a tragic one
Kasumi Miwa and Mechamaru are two characters that have been introduced relatively early in the story, during the Goodwill Event, when they were revealed to be two students from Kyoto. Miwa was a very kind and gentle girl, while Mechamaru was introduced as a robot, Ultimate Mechamaru, which was actually a cursed corpse operated by the real Kokichi Muta, who had an extreme form of Heavenly Restriction because of which he had to be hidden in darkness and could not be touched by light, as light would burn him severely. But before we actually give you the details, let us first tell you about their personalities.
Kasumi is a good-hearted and diligent young woman who lacks some of her classmates’ cynicism. She behaves like a typical teenage girl and is much more innocent and realistic. Kasumi is a fan of well-known exorcists like Satoru Gojo and wants to become one so she may make money.
Kasumi was reluctant to kill Yuji Itadori against Principal Yoshinobu Gakuganji’s order and subsequently regretted it. She puts so much effort into jujutsu sorcery as she wishes to help her two younger siblings, demonstrating her concern and unwavering attitude. She frequently considers herself to be useless and has genuine concerns about how her frailty would influence her friends. Kasumi acknowledges that she clutches her sword tightly out of dread of dying, but she has a solid reason for being willing to take a chance on a more powerful foe.
But Mechamaru, also known as Kokichi Muta, was unique. Kokichi is a quiet, introverted person who desired a “normal” body. He had a constant sense of repudiating the fact that he had been made to take an intrinsic oath. He braggedly acknowledged that he would happily surrender all of the Cursed Energy that had been bestowed upon him in exchange for a regular body.
Because of his bitterness, Kokichi harbors a persistent loathing towards those who shouldn’t have bodies. Panda proposed that he and Mechamaru get along since they are both incarnates during the Goodwill Event.
Kokichi, who sees Panda as nothing more than a plain, simple doll, disagrees with him on this point and is even angry. This is so that when Kokichi was unwell from his confinement and confined within his locked room, Panda could live freely in the sun. While living his life through Ultimate Mechamaru, Kokichi adopts the silent robotic demeanor around his classmates. Despite his handicap and how they may have treated him, he hoped to one day walk among them.
Kasumi Miwa, with whom Kokichi confessed to having romantic sentiments, was the person with whom he felt the closest. Kokichi was prepared to Binding Vow with the villains to obtain a regular body to fulfill his desire. He provided them with intelligence but stipulated in the agreement that they could not hurt his Kyoto allies. After his body was cured, Mechamaru tried to kill both Mahito and Suguru Geto. Kokichi used strategy and perseverance to fight valiantly for his objective. However, his desperation caused him to pass away before meeting Kasumi and his classmates.
As you can see, the relationship between Miwa and Mechamaru is quite complex, and it was bound to be like that from the very start. Due to Mechamaru’s nature, there is little any of them can to about their relationship, although it is quite evident that they liked each other. Miwa saw something good in Mechamaru. She saw a gentle and caring side to him, whereas he appreciated Miwa’s feelings, and he grew fond of her, too, even though he knew he could not approach her.
We can absolutely confirm that Miwa and Mechamaru were in love with each other; this is one of the more straightforward ships in Jujutsu Kaisen, and while it wasn’t stated openly, it is quite obvious that Akutami wanted us to perceive them as a potential couple.
As Mechamaru was fighting Mahito, Miwa talked to Ultimate Mechamaru and told him that she would like to see him one day in person and that she liked how they all connected and became closer after the Goodwill Event. On the other hand, when Mechamaru motivated himself during the fight against Mahito, he said he would like to see “everyone” but always thought of Miwa first. This is why it is more than clear that Miwa and Mechamaru really did like each other, but sadly, their relationship never bloomed. Why?
Well, before Miwa and Mechamaru could actually meet – the two of them never saw or met each other in person – Mahito killed Mechamaru, so their wish never came true. This is one of the sadder stories from Jujutsu Kaisen, and there is nothing much that we can add, save for the fact that we’re sad that this relationship never developed into a proper one. But, still, we have to praise Akutami for developing the story and for showing at least part of it.
