Jujutsu Kaisen is a series where the supporting character Satoru Gōjō is so beloved that most people think the whole series is about him. But it is not. Namely, Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yūji Itadori, the unlikely protagonist and a vessel for the extremely powerful Ryōmen Sukuna. And while most people want Itadori to consume as many of Sukuna’s fingers as possible and then die, Gōjō is the one protecting him. Now, Itadori’s story has been an interesting one, and with the recent manga developments, it is promising to become even more interesting in the future. In light of that fact, we will answer one question related to Itadori and his status in the series. In this article, you will find out what Jujutsu Sorcerer Grade Itadori is in the series.

Unfortunately, Itadori’s Jujutsu Sorcerer Grade is not known as it has not been revealed. As a student, he would have been a Grade 4 Sorcerer, but due to his connection with Sukuna and the fact that he is a talented sorcerer, he is probably between Grade 3 and Grade 2 at this moment. Sukuna himself is a Special Grade Curse, but his powers are not directly related to Itadori’s, which is why Itadori is not a Special Grade Sorcerer like Gōjō.

As you might have deduced for yourselves, Yūji Itadori will be the focus of this article as we expand on the answer we have given above. We shall tell you everything you need to know about this subject, as well as how it is related to Itadori’s story and his status in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. In case you’re not up-to-date with everything that has been going on in this great series, we have to warn you that some spoilers might be present in this article.

The Grade system in Jujutsu Kaisen is power-based

Jujutsu Kaisen has, like a lot of other shonen anime series, a ranking system that is used to determine and scale the powers of its characters. The system is not consistently applied throughout the series, and it is not set in stone, but it is a good reference point if you want to see how powerful your favorite characters are and how they are doing in comparison to other characters from the series. The Grades (called Kyū in Japanese) are as follows:

  • Grade 4 (よんきゅう Yonkyū)
  • Grade 3 (さんきゅう Sankyū)
  • Semi-Grade 2 (じゅんきゅう Jun Nikyū)
  • Grade 2 (きゅう Nikyū)
  • Semi-Grade 1 (じゅんいっきゅう Jun Ikkyū)
  • Grade 1 (いっきゅう Ikkyū)
  • Special Grade 1 (とくべついっきゅう Tokubetsu Ikkyū)
  • Special Grade (とっきゅう Tokkyū)

As you can see, the Grades start with a higher number and then go down, but with 4 being the lowest level and 1 being the highest. Special Grades are more powerful than traditional Grades. This system is applied to Jujutsu Sorcerers, but also Curses, cursed objects, and weapons as well, which means that it has a wider area of application.

A student at the school usually starts off as a Grade 4, but with time, the student continues to grow, and his Grade changes. This is not a rule, though, as a student can start off with a higher grade as well, based on the experience they’ve had prior to entering the school. As you can see, the system is quite flexible and can be adapted based on the situation and context.

As for promotions, the basic way for a Jujutsu Sorcerer to advance in rank is to receive a recommendation from another graded Sorcerer. A Sorcerer gets compensated extra for the riskier jobs in a higher-graded Sorcerer’s daily routine. Teachers of pupils are not allowed to submit their own pupils up for a promotion. Based on the recommendation, a Jujutsu Sorcerer submits his promotion request to one of the higher-ups, such as the principal of a school, who then approves or rejects the proposal.

The candidate for promotion to Grade 1 will go on multiple missions with a sorcerer of that level after receiving recommendations from two or more sorcerers of that rank. The individual who submits the recommendation cannot also accompany the nominee. If the candidate does well on these missions, they will be promoted to Semi-Grade 1 and given a mission to exorcise a Grade 1 by himself. The decision to grant or refuse Grade 1 status will be made in light of the result of that.

And this is all we have to state about the Grade system in Jujutsu Kaisen. Now, we shall elaborate on Itadori’s status in light of these facts.

Itadori’s Grade is currently unknown, but we can speculate about it

Yūji Itadori is, as we have established, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen. Now, we know that Jujutsu Kaisen is a shonen title and shonen protagonists are usually the strongest characters in the series or will, at one point, become the strongest (Naruto, Ichigo, Luffy, etc.).

But Jujutsu Kaisen has already destroyed so many tropes that not making Itadori the (potentially) strongest character did not come as a shock to fans when it was revealed that numerous other characters are significantly stronger than him and it doesn’t really seem like Itadori will surpass them at any point in the future.

As we have said in the introduction, Itadori’s Grade is unknown, as Akutami has never officially revealed it. Because a lot of his powers come from the fact that he is Sukuna’s current vessel, it is probably difficult to assess him objectively, although he has mastered many techniques by himself and has proven himself capable of fighting even without Sukuna’s help.

When he was first enrolled in the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, he was, of course, a Grade 4 Sorcerer as he had absolutely no experience whatsoever, despite being Sukuna’s vessel; this is because Sukuna and Itadori share the same body, but they cannot be active at the same time, which is why their powers are actually separate.

But, after training a lot with Gōjō and following him and his friends on missions, Itadori has gotten a lot better, and his powers and skills have increased significantly. His skills have increased, and he has become much more powerful than he was, now being able to take on Curses all by himself, without Gōjō’s or even Sukuna’s help.

He has also proven himself capable of fending off Sukuna’s attempts to take over his body. He has also consumed many of his fingers without dying or losing control over himself.

From that perspective, we can speculate that Itadori is somewhere between a Grade 3 and a Grade 2 Sorcerer, but with the potential to become a powerful Grade 1 Sorcerer in the future. He has certainly surpassed Grade 4 and is more powerful than a standard Grade 3 Sorcerer, but we’re unsure whether he’s reached the level of some other powerful Grade 2 Sorcerers.

As we have explained, due to the fact that Sukuna’s abilities are wholly separate from Itadori’s, he cannot be classified as a Special Grade Sorcerer, like Gōjō, Getō, or some other characters.

These powers are not his own, and while Sukuna is undoubtedly a Special Grade Curse, this does not apply to Itadori. So, as we have said, Itadori’s own powers are currently leaning towards Grade 2, and in the future, we think he has the potential to become a Grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer, which is certainly going to be interesting to observe, so we’re quite excited about it.
