New Hal Jordan Has Been Cast in ‘Lanterns,’ But Fans Aren’t Fully On Board: “DC Studios/WB is Broke”

The DC Universe has many projects in development under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Among the most immediate releases are the animated series Creature Commandos and Superman, set for a 2025 release, along with several live-action shows featuring prominent DC characters.

One of these upcoming shows is Lanterns, which will focus on three key Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner.

We already know that Nathan Fillion will portray Guy Gardner, having been cast even before the show was officially announced. The only remaining mysteries are who will play John Stewart—rumored to be a younger actor—and Hal Jordan, for whom the studio is seeking an older “mentor-type” personality.

Recently, reports surfaced that Josh Brolin was offered the role of Hal Jordan, but fans reacted negatively, citing his age as a concern. Brolin reportedly turned down the role, and THR has now reported that Emmy-winner Kyle Chandler has been cast in the role.

Kyle Chandler is widely recognized for his performances as Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights and John Rayburn in Bloodline, both highlighting his dramatic abilities. He has also starred in notable films like King Kong, Super 8, and the Godzilla franchise, reinforcing his reputation as a versatile actor in both film and television.

However, fans have once again expressed dissatisfaction with this casting choice, primarily due to Chandler’s age, as he is currently 59 years old. Some have also criticized the decision as a “cheap” option, adding to ongoing concerns about the overall quality of casting, costumes, and locations within Gunn’s DC Universe.

All the actors rumored for the role of Hal Jordan have been older, indicating that the studio likely doesn’t intend for Hal to be the primary Lantern in the DCU. The reports also point out that Chandler has signed up for TV series only and will not take part in movies.

The ages of those considered for the role suggest that Hal Jordan may either retire or meet his end by the conclusion of the show.
