One Piece: Why Did Eustass Kid Attempt to Kill Luffy?
Eustass “Captain” Kid is a renowned South Blue pirate who serves as the Kid Pirates captain. As one of eleven Supernovas who landed on Sabaody two years ago, he is part of what is known as “the worst generation” of pirates in history. He is one of the most feared captains in the world of One Piece and has one of the highest bounties in the series. Luffy… well, the series’s protagonist doesn’t need an introduction, does he? Luffy and Kid had a complex relationship, which recently culminated in Kid attempting to kill Luffy in Wano. Why? Read all about it here.
Luffy and Kid had a very complex relationship
Kid has the same dream as Luffy: to find the One Piece and become the new king of pirates. For this reason, combined with the recklessness and fighting spirit he sees in the Straw Hat, he seems to greatly respect him. However, even though they both often find themselves having to face the same problems, Kid shows that he always wants to solve them his way, apparently massacring all those who dare to mock his ambition, and this makes him the exact opposite of Luffy.
After the war for supremacy, he claims that he is not so forgiving as to let him roam the seas as he pleases. Regardless, Luffy had aroused Kid’s interest and curiosity for some time through his exploits against the World Government, which occurred before their actual meeting.
After the time skip, Kid seems amused to see Luffy as Caesar Clown’s prisoner at Punk Hazard, and later, the two establish a sort of competition while they are prisoners at Udon. Subsequently, he also collaborated with Luffy during the battle against Orochi and the Hundred Beast Pirates on the day of the Fire Festival.
Kid wanted to kill Luffy because he was angry that he became an Emperor
So, as you can see, there is a lot of tension between Kid and Luffy, which makes sense, seeing how the two characters actually have the same goal and are, thus, rivals. This is why their relationship is so strained and why, despite collaborating at times, they never became friends.
On top of that, Kid has a very belligerent personality, so there is no way that he would simply become Luffy’s friend just like that. So, this is a position he is in when we see him at the end of the Wano Country Saga.
We know that Kid wanted to kill Luffy… but why? Well, after the downfall of Kaido and Big Mom, Kid, and Law went their way while the Straw Hats remained in Wano. At the same time, with two places now empty, the World Government was quick to name two new emperors: Buggy the Clown (for whatever stupid reason) and Monkey D. Luffy, whose “promotion” actually made a lot of sense. The World Government quickly printed this news, and while he was going away, Kid saw it.
When he saw that Luffy had been named Emperor, angry and jealous (as he helped defeat Big Mom), he returned to the Flower Capital, wanting to face Luffy again and, potentially, even kill him. He could simply not stand that Luffy had been named Emperor before him, so it makes sense that his reaction was such. But he never got the chance to fight Luffy.
He was first dragged into the Fire Festival against his will and participated in the local fireworks, meaning he never actually saw Luffy then. Later, he did meet with him again, but he did not fight him, and they went their separate ways again, as rivals, as Kid still held the same dream as Luffy. And that is the story of how Kid almost attempted to kill Luffy in Wano.
